I'm behind Kyle 100% on this one. As I often say, the effect is but a small part of the routine. If you took a successful act and boil it down to just the basic effects, and performed them one after the other - first, you'd have a very short show, and second, it wouldn't be very entertaining.
Someone can take Run-Rabbit-Run and absolutely kill with it. Another performer could take the same effect and bomb big-time. Heck, you can take someone's entire act and repeat it word-for-word, effect-by-effect, and still not get the same reaction. Bob, I'm relatively new to the Café, but in the short time that I've been here, I've found Kyle to be very generous with his time, and with his expertise in the field. His insights into any subject are very, very ... well, very insightful. |

Wellington,
I have to agree with you. Kyle seems to be answering the wrong question. Kyle, you have nothing to prove here, we are all magicians trying to present magic creatively. Your post conveys a good deal of self-love. Wellington- you could calm down a bit too. |

Stop getting your knickers in a twist everyone.
Wellington I can understand your gripes but I do think you may of slightly misjudged Kyle’s answer. If Kyle wants a big spectacular trick finalizing his act, good for him. I understand your post was expecting nice, simple, cuddly tricks and Kyle’s answer could sound a bit bigheaded and grand. But I don't think he's boasting. He's just being honest. I think the thing with kids is you've got to be quite spontaneous and fun! Its not like you could perform the chair suspension trick when your Grandchildren come round unexpectedly. Unless you want to put on a whole show that "fits together like a fine puzzle" I’m sure you’re both lovely people, we're all fellow magicians here. Give peace a chance. We all have different methods and ways of dealing with kids, I just do the Stretchy Thumb, Penny Behind the Ear and then I make Big Ben vanish! |

He did say his favorite effect was the levitation of the child if you read his post. He was simply stating that he put a lot of time into his show and therefore loves all of his effects. He doesn't do an effect that he doesn't like because it's the latest craze or costs the most money. He loves every routine he does. I know some magi that hate certain routines but do them because they're audience pleasers. I think you missed the basic idea behind his post that you can take the simplest of tricks and make them into miracles. Mike Finney plays Vegas with 6 card repeat and the cut and restored rope... doesn't get much simpler than that but it's his presentation and style that make it so popular for him. See where I'm going?

I like to use Twisting Aces, then Bizarre Twist, then Bizarre Vanish. The children go wild when they see that their card has disappeared. I don't know, but I use the same basic show and effects for the kids that I do for adults. I simply change the patter and use the magic word "Abracadabra". The kids love it and the adults enjoy it as well, I mean after all, they hired you to begin with.

I didn't answer this question because I felt the same way Kyle did, that every trick I do is my favorite otherwise it wouldn’t be in my show. I go crazy if I forget to pack one of my tricks, like the show wouldn’t be complete without this one trick.
So Kyle I am glad you said it. I just know Kyle from online and he has been very helpful to every PM I have sent him and seems very friendly. Wish I knew him personally. Maybe one day, Kyle. Shawn D |

Kyle and all -
Thanks for your insight. I can see the points of view of many performers here. Not trying to add fuel to the fire, as Kyle has clearly stated that his favorite is the chair suspension, but that he had a really hard time choosing (by the way, so did I, I couldn't even get the list shorter than two!) However, surely all of you must realize that your show should be structured on a steady incline throughout the show, with peaks and valleys emotionally for the audience, (Henning Nelms book, and Dariel Fitzkee books, and all that important stuff), and so there is a point or two in the show that definitely PEAKS OUT (doesn't necessarily need to be your finale.) That should be your "must use" trick, even if it isn't your favorite. However, as Kyle said, all of the tricks before lead up to that peak out level, so they are all interconnected. If you know what you are doing (and haven't just slapped a show together) this is just the way it goes in a successful show. Just another opinion, not saying that this is law! The Gr8 DonaldD.

I am curious to how eyesawthat gets paid for doing kids shows with Paul Harris card tricks? Kids generally hate card tricks. If they don't hate them, they're RARELY entertained by them. That's some sleight of hand stuff not good for a kids show, haha. I do limited sleight of hand in my kids show too but nothing like I do when I work my restaurant/walk around gigs. I just don't feel that kids can appreciate it. Next you're going to say you do 3Fly for kids parties too.

Thank you all for your kind words and support. I really do appreciate it and I thank you dearly.
I never strive to be egotistical or to come across as knowing it all. I certainly will be the first to say I do not know it all by any means. As a performer who takes my magic seriously, I am constantly just learning and always will. That is one of the beauties of the Café. It is magicians helping magicians and sharing of ideas and of opinions. Those who know me know I do have strong opinions, but please do not mistake a strong opinion as a guy with an ego. That could not be further from the truth. I strive to help out others when I can and to share ideas and my own thoughts from my own experiences. I also strive to spark further and more deeper discussion in some of the threads. I feel this is a good thing because it gets us all talking about different things and exploring more about a certain topic. I only hope that all of this was just a mere misunderstanding. As others have stated, I only said what I said because I am a strong believer that every effect in my show is as important to the outcome of the show as the next effect. James is right. My motivation in many of my post comes from a passion and love for the magical arts and to elevate magic to different levels. To share my own ideas and opinions and to listen and hear others as well. To talk openly and discuss magic and to help other magic brethren when I can, and to have magicians help me learn as well. That is what magic Café is all about. Mushu: You explained it very nicely my friend. People were simply stating what effect or trick they liked the best, but the main point I was making was that it is not so much the trick you do, but what you do with the trick that makes it your best. Obviously you are doing a presentation that gets a great response and a great reaction. This is why you like it so much. So instead of us stating what trick we like the best, we should state the trick and state why the trick and presentation work so well for you. Everyone does Professors Nightmare, but I bet you there is not 2 of us that do it the exact same way. We all have our own characters and style and that makes every effect we do different. This is why I stated it is not so much the trick that is important, as it is the presentation of that trick. Giochi: I think you are also misunderstanding me. I am not trying to prove anything. Really I am not. I am only stating an opinion and through it I hope to generate further discussion on the topic. That really is it. The only "self love" that I have is a love and passion for the art of magic. That is all. Bryan: Thank you so much my friend. You said it exactly as I meant it. You totally do understand where I am coming from and I thank you for that. I am hoping you may now understand where I am coming from and I hope you realize I never come here to toot my own horn, but to simple share my love for magic and to meet new friends and to both learn and help others along the way. Kyle -------------------------------------------------------------------- T: Do not stop attending magic clubs just because a few people have the wrong idea of what magic is all about and do not realize that openly sharing magic information with other magicians is not only right, but it is the way magic should always be. Do not let this prevent you from loving magic and learning magic in a club environment. The SAM club in Philadelphia has been great to me and I know and respect and appreciate many of the members. We may not always agree on every issue, but that is fine. We do respect each other and we help each other out in any way that we can. We give support and we listen and we generally share the love and passion of magic between us. Sure there are a few that just do not " get it". But they are few and far between. You get that in most any magic club. Just do not allow that to get in the way of your own enjoyment. There really are some great people there and some great friends. Kyle

Kyle,
I just want to chime in and give you my support. You have contributed an AMAZING amount of knowledge and advice that I am sure has been incredibly helpful to those who take the time to read your posts. You should be commended for the extensive detail you go into regarding so many topics. Can you be "wordy"? Heck yes! Take a shot of No-Doze folks and read up! Is it your opinion? You bet. We all got them. Is it egotistical? That would depend on the reader and how they interpret your writings. I personally see NO EGO at all. Just a very giving guy who makes a CHOICE to share his wisdom. It is not always easy to write words of conviction and always sound humble. It's a tough forum sometimes and overall I am sure you and most others mean well. God knows I have come across wrong in several cases. Sometimes my passion is so strong I can loose my mind or not be delicate enough. Keep posting and LET IT RIP!! Thanks for your input and have a great Christmas! Chance

Ok y'all...Back on track:
MUST USE would be a HAT TEAR- Cute, fun, and if lucky, enough to pick the perfect little girl, a sentimental audience pleaser where SHE gets the credit. Click here to view attached image.

I want one, Chance! It's Christmas and I am over-extended. What are your credit terms?
I own your Balloon Wand and the audience LOVES it. Do you have interchangeable cards? Doing 3 shows at festivals often has a repeat audience. Anyway...Wolf's stuff "OWNZ" and will soon be a Must Use in this category.

Glodmagic,
Just stick a new card right over the face of the existing card or tear the old card off and put a new one on. I use a typical double stick tape to attach the card to the gimmick. I advise a double thick card, as it is much sturdier. Hey, you are going to have to talk to Shelley about CREDIT. Be careful, she is a shrewd businesswoman. Heck, she is the ONLY reason I am still in business! I would be spending all my money on magic if I had it my way. Hope this helps and thanks for your support! Chance

I have the same problem some of you have. I want to get some new things for my show but that would mean cutting something else out! I have to do it as I get some repeat shows and they like to see at least something new.
One of my favorites to perform for both adults and kids is Party Of Six. I have a lot of fun with this one. |

Like Kyle I don't have a favourite, all my tricks can be swapped round and done in a different order if I wish, and for shorter shows I just remove one or two depending on the time. I always use the lion puppet though, but if I'm doing 2 x 30 minute shows instead of the hour, I use him only in the second show as I just split my 1-hour show in half. The lions trick has changed for Christmas. The rest of my show has just changed as well and all my tricks from last year are now in show 2.
As Kyle said it's not the trick itself it's the performer. It's what you do with the trick that makes it special. There’s lots of MUST HAVE tricks that lots of magicians use that I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, like Peanut Butter and Jelly, Run Rabbit Run. It's not because they're bad tricks. They just wouldn't suit me. So and So's books saying about a magic show being peeks and troughs doesn't mean much to me. I don't read books to tell me how to perform. I don't even own any. I just find out what works for me and do it.
Yours Funfully

Okay, this may come as a surprise, but my favorite trick for young kids is the "wilting flower" and the routine that David Ginn talks about in Children Laugh Louder. For years I had a wilting flower, but never saw the incredible potential of the routine. I have never had a trick that is so cheap, so easy to perform, pack, and carry, and gives about 8-10 minutes of entertainment. Very young kids LOVE it.
Sleightly yours,

Dusty the rabbit (Axtels Rabbit Puppet) is my definite favourite. I've only had him since March this year. I'm sure he's getting more respect from the kids than me. They love him. I also hear the mums and dads giggling at the back every time I use him.
Here he is... Dusty the rabbit |

Lorne:
As I said before, this proves that it really is not so much the trick you have but what you do with the trick in a presentation that is fun for the kids. Your wilting flower routine is very simple in concept but it is your funny and comical patter and routine that makes it a favorite of your audiences. Billy: That is great. It becomes a character the kids can relate to in your show. May I ask how you use him in a routine? Kyle
