Just did my first cardiographgic new routine this past holiday party and it went over incrediblky well. I have had it for a year but refused to add it to my show until I could make a routine that was vastly different and fit my stage personna. It is a great trick.

Aww you can have so much fun with fraidy cat rabbit. It is such a classic and there is so much creativity you can do with that.
Star: What types of things do you do with it in your own routine that have worked for you? certianly do not have to tell us the entire routine as I would not want anyone stealing it. Just curious to know when people state what their favorite is.. to learn why they think it is their favorite. I am sure your routine is probably great and would love to hear more about it. Kyle

I don't think I do anything terribly original other than put some "me" into it. Mine was a gift from a friend who thought it was a piece of junk; he was getting nothing with it.
I think the one thing I do that makes it powerful is, near the end when they ask to "turn it around", I remove the bunny, set it aside, and turn ALL my attention to the frame. I begin to turn the FRAME around. Naturally, they all yell "No", and tell me to turn the bunny picture around. I love this, as it allows me to ditch the frame/gimmick because the KIDS want me to, not because I want to. Now, of course, ya GOT 'em! |

I like to start the show with a sucker trick.
For example Hippty Hop Rabbits. At the end of the routine I bring up the loudest child and of course he knows how I did it. I hand him the rabbit not allowing him to see the back side and ask him to show everyone the back of the rabbit. Wow, how did you make the rabbit turn red? The child becomes the hero.

Wonderful idea on taking the bunny out. That way you can have a lot of fun with the entire frame and focusing on showing that totally. The kids must go nuts. Great idea. It is also always great when you can make the child the star. Kyle

One trick that is always in my Saddle Bags No Matter What is a Change Bag. I have a little Comedy routine with a Change Bag that always brings laughs to both young and old. I explain that it's a Magic bag I got from ol' Doc McPugg, a Traveling Snake Oil Salesman who came to town a long time ago.

I must say that, by far and without exception, I get the best results doing the Pen-through-the-Bill trick for children. If I had to guess a trick that would be most impressive to children, I must admit that I would not guess this one. However, I am a second-grade teacher, and, each year, my students absolutely love this trick! They love it when I pull the pen sideways out of the dollar, without tearing it. Magic in general is a great way to get children's attention and get them ready for learning in the classroom. This particular trick is also one of the main reasons why my students believe I am REALLY magic. Because of this trick, they now think I can even stop the rain for recess. The great news is that, so far, luck has even allowed me to do that. Yes, my students can never get enough of this trick, they repeatedly ask me to do it, they repeatedly try to do it themselves (unsuccessfully, of course) and not once has any of them figured it out. Why do they love this trick so much. I do not know for sure. Maybe it is only because I have not yet done something that they would like better. Until, then, it is the best trick in my arsenal of tricks for children. I guess the value of any trick is in the effect it has on any particular audience, for any particular performer. I can see how it might not work for everyone and all audiences, but it sure does work for me with children. I've already gotten well beyond my $15.00 worth of value out of it.

I think perhaps what bob is saying is that we magicians tend to just get hooked on magic. I know for one that I have a drawer at home of magic I have not even begun to look into or putting into my show. Being a magician is a way to be young at heart and still be able to buy toys with a reason and purpose. hehe =)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Someone has to tell you this, it may as well be me. You will be spending even more money in the future." Bob -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If Kyle's understanding of Bob's quote is correct, I fully agree. As a matter of fact, I am already well-hooked on magic, like most magicians. I am far from being a greenhorn or beginner. As a matter of fact, I've been performing at some level, since I was 12 years-old. Since then, I have, again as most magicians, acquired a huge amount of tricks, and the addiction has never faded. If anything, it has only become more intense. I'm sure I will continue to collect and perform new tricks, whenever I find and/or learn them. As a matter of another fact, I do, like most magicians, actively seek out new tricks. I look for those created by others; I also work to create my own. However, I will still say that, although I will always have many and learn many more, I will also always get the best results from certain tricks. These favorite tricks never have and never will affect the number of new tricks I will acquire. As I think I said in my earlier post, the Pen-Through-the-Bill may only be my favorite trick for children at this time, because I have yet to find a more effective one. However, I am always looking for something better--especially for children. I am currently trying a number of the favorite children's tricks suggested by others in this topic. As a result, I may soon even revise my opinion of the best trick for children. Thanks to everyone for all the ideas. Sincerely, Dr. Faust

After I warm up the audience, I always like to OPEN my "young" children's show with Codology (Kovari version) as it gets them reacting right away.
I like this effect because I don't think too many magicians do it (at least not in my part of the world), it packs light, is colorful, and has a nice surprising climax at the end. Regards, Ray

Ray can you give me a little insight into codology? I am not sure I am familiar with the name. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kyle,
A google search with the key words "Kovari Codology" should produce some results. It is Kovari's (in the U.K.) version of Acrobatic Silks/Monkey bar... except with fish. I was fortunate enough to obtain Kovari's original version 10-15 years ago, as most dealers now carry Viking Magic's version (whom Kovari gave the rights to manufacture) which IMHO is not quite as visual or as easy to setup. It is however, still workable and more compact than the original version. Ray

I noticed that too, Ron, though I wonder whether it's exactly the same design as the one I have. My version is a green square-shaped plastic rod about 1 1/2" thick with a wooden flap on the bottom. The white rope(s) is about 3/8" thick and is very soft and pliable. Viking's version is a silver-mylar covered round plastic rod and the rope is not as thick, maybe 3/16 or 1/4", and made of a cord-like material.
