I am sure that most of you have noticed that some of the items such as Inferno and Vanishing Pen on Penguin's site have the terms "Highly Recommended" next to the item. This of course can convince or motivate a person into purchasing that particular item. I am curious to how it is determinedwhich product gets labeled "Highy Recommended." Is it done by a majority vote among the magiians/employees at Penguin, by one person (Acar), and what criteria is used to make tha determination (price, ease of use, impact, etc.)?
It certainly is a helpful tool among many to make a determination which effect to purchase. Michael

Since it is not explained at the site, I would guess it is purely a marketing tool.

I wish I had a more interesting answer... We write "highly recommended" when we love a product and would personally recommend it
We offer thousands of tricks at penguin. But our goal is always to help you find the stuff that's most likely to make you happy. Sure, if you're looking for something very particular, we want to have that for you, but if you're just browsing for something great, these are the tricks we think you're going to love performing. |

I would like to see the label: Not recommanded at all, we have warned you! It will be funny and fair! lol

Thanks Acar, I really love checking the Top 10 effects when I shop. Anything top 10 is usually a good sign for highly recommended.
Posting ever so slightly.

I would have thought that "Highly Recommended" would come from the comments of purchasers that are listed within the trick's listing!

I think it's like a good brick and mortar that would see every new book, video ( now DVD ) and trick that came out. They'd read, watch and play with everything that came in the shop. Experienced dealers could
separate the wheat from the chaff and could "highly recommend" what they felt was the good stuff ( that you'd actually like and use ). |

Yes so why bother buying any of the other stuff that's not highly recommended? If I'm not going to use it what's the point of even selling it?

If someone says "hey, you look nice today", it doesn't imply everyone else looks bad.
And in the same way, "Highly recommended" is just our short way of saying "we looked closely at this and think there's a good chance most people are gonna like it." Some bookstores have "staff picks". You could also think of it like that. There are plenty of other great books in the store, those are just the ones the staff happened to love. |

Staff Favorites is much more clear and if that's the really what it is that's what should be used. It's important for the consumer to know exactly who is doing the recommending since online recommendations and reviews like those found here on the Café can influence the decision to buy. That's why the FTC recently revised it's endorsement guides. To protect you as a consumer online. Important info for Café readers Some very interesting stuff there! ⱭD |

These are all great points, and thought provoking. Even yours, Don -- yes, really! Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts.
The FTC Endorsement Guide doesn't seem to apply here, since the recommendation is in the description of the product, not a reviewer, but I'm still interested in further clarifying who is recommending it. I think it will help the recommendation carry more weight, not less. I love the tricks I recommend, and I'd be happy to put my name next to the recommendation. It'll be fun to think of a way to clarify this. Definitely food for thought. Thanks again everyone! |

Clarification of the recommendation process, the criteria used for recommending the product, and who is doing the recommending would be a vaulable to know. FOr instance, Magismith's Flash Tray received a highly recommended notation several weeks before it was to be shipped. Why?
Thank Acar for you and your staff for providing outstanding customer service and for always wanteing to improve that service. Michael
