When you first sign on with a company there are tests administered.
One either gets the position or not based upon such results. Once employed many folks get to a point of complacency and either cease to further their education or stop growing altogether. Many companies do not administer testing after you have been granted permission to board the ship. Such is not the case in some instances when there is sensitive material to deal with. I consider myself above average in taking tests. More often than not, I wrap up my business prior to most folks whom are still busy sharpening their pencils. Now to my point, today out of the blue, our team was rounded up, "No questions please, leave your coffee and all belongings", and given a test wherein, you must make a straight line to connect arrows, in row upon row. No mathematical questions nor applied mathematics for that matter; pure and simple scribbling a straight line. I laughed when I first opened my booklet, because I thought to myself, "This must be the easiest darn test in the world, watch me pull a rabbit out of this hat!" Five minutes into the testing, my friggin' hand was numb. I looked around the room and witnessed all kinds of folks hand wrenching and literally writhing in pain from the test. Heads shaking and mumbling curses(perhaps from the left behind coffee) etc... I completed 215 character sets before the five minute limit alarm went off to a room full of disgruntled participants. We were speculating for at least half an hour afterwards, as to what in the world the results would convey to our overlords. Here are a few, I don't want to tip my hand(no pun intended) entirely, * To test for early signs of Parkinson's Disease * To see if folks had shown up inebriated for work * To see who has visual problems (after awhile it's hard to keep track of the arrows) * To see who would refuse this silly test Please note, the test was administered by a government official and was not for health related purposes according to the facilitator. The test was created by The McGraw Hill Company. Do you folks have any idea what kind of results this test may convey? p.s. #$@! you McGraw Hill! |

I'm going to offer some guesses BEFORE trying to google it.
To see who would most conscientiously follow the test without questioning why. Or the exact opposite like you suggested above: Who would refuse to take the silly test. OK, now I'll go try and google. it. |

Devious, where did I say video?
haha, got you. I edited it BEFORE you were able to post your response. OK, I'll admit to my initial confusion. When I first glanced at the picture you posted, the McGraw Hill Financial symbol looked like a play button and I thought I was looking at some type of embedded video. (Not that I've ever seen an embedded video on the Café message boards before! DOH!) |

Yes, you were quicker on the draw there guy, touche' again.
It is possible to embed video here, but only two folks have ever done so to my knowledge, Jamie Grant and myself. p.s. I scored five number two black pencils out of the deal. |

@Landmark,
It's interesting that you say so, for these little puppies were manufactured in (May-Hee-Ko). I did enjoy your comment nonetheless! |

I forgot to mention one fellow, I won't mention his name,
but it starts with an M and ends with an L. He asked the facilitator, "If you were me what would you do?" "I would take the test." replied the facilitator. "It's too bad you're not me." he said in a matter of factly tone, and walked out the door. We all had to shake our heads at that moment. I felt like I was back in grade school. |

Maybe they were testing who would steal the most pencils!
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.

I just couldn't resist there Manuel. Can you say, "Flip-Stick?"
She did say, "Take as many pencils as you think you will need." She never asked for what right? |

Maybe they wanted to see who would make all the marks that go in one direction and then turned the paper to make all the marks in another direction , etc.
Or maybe they were testing to see how long or how much writing the average person can do now-a-days before experiencing writers cramp. Either way "the take as many pencils as you think you need" is a clear sign that they are screwing with your head with some kind of phycological test. Let us know what it was, I'm really curious. -Mary Mowder |

Excellent thinking. That might have been exactly the kind of creative thought they were testing for.

@ Mary,
I actually started with upstrokes, then I had a revelation, "Hey it won't hurt as much if I start using up strokes." This allowed me to exersize other muscles and got me back on track at my former pace. @Balducci, It took sharp marks to connect the arrows. They were very close to one another. If you started to lose the sharpness, your marks would bleed into one another, thus the "Take as many pencils as you think you will need?" remark, I suppose. Using one pencil to create a straight edge would have been a tremendous asset in the test and is one that I hadn't considered. I understand now that leaving the coffee behind was to allow folks to perhaps not be as jittery during the test because of the caffeine buzz etc... I promise to reveal what it was for, when I find out. Each of us must return individually back to the facilitator on thursday at various times. p.s I don't mind taking tests when I'm getting compensated for them during normal work hours. |

My guess- ergonomic study for future test design, to see how fatigue and repetitive motion affects test results. The interviewer on Thursday will see if your hand is still sore, etc. and they'll use the data to design better methods to mark answers on tests.
