Who said, "Come up with the effect you want to achieve, THEN devise the method to do it"?
I want to teleport from in front of an audience across the country (say, from LA to NY) and be on a video screen (skype?) or a phone and "prove" I am really there and they are not just watching a tape. Perhaps grab a souvenir or ask a bystander a question etc. Any links to this being done before? Any thoughts on how to achieve this "grand illusion"? |

The best way? Discovering you have a long lost identical twin would be a good start

I'm working on it, and have a few ideas. I just didn't want to duplicate some famous version that is already out there. There are a few things in Mentalism using a phone to reach someone in a distant location. But, I want to be the one teleporting and I envision some video chat with the audience from the remote location.

Sounds very similar to David Copperfield's Portal Illusion.

Yes, that one would be hard to beat. Certainly a beautiful effect.

Franz Harary did something like this in a Jerry Lewis MDA Telemarathon.

You should take a look at JC Sum's "Impossible Teleportation Mega Illusion", in which he disappears from a cabinet at the bottom of a 50 floor building, and is then seen, via a video link, to reappear a few seconds later from a similar cabinet on the roof of the building.
Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKET98KJ8gI He explains the method in his "Ultimate Illusion Collection Vault Edition" book. |

When I lived in Asheville NC, my mom lived 8 hours away on the opposite side of the state. One day I called her to talk and got interrupted and asked her to call me back on my home phone in 10mins. She did. After about 5 mins on the phone I got her to ask me to come visit. To which I said ok and hung up. Literally seconds after I hung up, she heard someone knocking on her door. It was me!
To her I had teleported over the distance of the entire state, an 8 hour drive, in a matter of seconds! It was especially reinforced because she called my home number and not my cell number. So How did I do it? easy. I secretly drove the 8hrs to her house one day. Then had my home phone calls forwarded to my cell. So when she called my home number, my cell rang. Of course I made the excuse for her to call me. Then I waited out side her house for the right time and knocked on the door. It was funny and worked like a charm. Also in this video I predicted something that would happen at a local magic club meeting via video. They randomly picked a place out of a phone book. I then played the video and the me in the video told them what place they picked. Not only that, but the me in the video was actually at that selected place! This could easily be reworked into a teleportation type of effect. here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCk4QqxGngg |

Chad-
That is very similiar to how I proposed to my wife. I was in Montana and she was in California. I maded a DVD for her to watch on her birthday during which I was throwing a "party" in the studio. A few minutes into it, the doorbell rang in the living room where she was watching it, and on screen I reacted to the sound. Then I kept on talking for a bit and the doorbell rang again. On screen I excused myself and walked off camera and then came in the front door. She was very surprised indeed! |

I'm stretching my memory, but I believe David Berglas did this with a car as well. I think he even talked about it in "Mind and Magic of David Berglas"

Yes, confirmed (but sans car). He did it on Aug. 23, 1958 for "Saturday Spectacular" - teleporting from London to Glasgow. It's written up in the book.
Maybe it was Harary who did it with a car...having trouble recalling exactly who did that. I'll ask Franz next time we chat unless someone else knows who I'm trying to remember.
