T2,may be a hard item to find! Not sure if Randi Rain, makes them anymore!
It would save your hand, but also let others know, you were not using the real deal,if smashed! You don't want to get busted, either! I'll use the Scorpion, but may just use an egg later! I never would have used the spike,or blade to begin with! The Scorpion, was what sold me on doing a S&S !

One thing about these effects that has barely been touched on- they should NEVER be done with a participant's hand! Even apart from the fact that many innocent participants have been seriously injured by thoughtless performers using that presentation, the mere idea (regardless of safety factors or whether or not the effect actually dangerous or not) that a mentalist would subject an audience member to real physical danger is, to my mind, completely tasteless and reprehensible.

Chris, is your hand healing up? How soon before you will be in action, or hasn't this affected your show too much?

and as a result has joined the ranks of the many others who have done the same... many of who did so even though they knew exactly where the spike was.... and here's Mind Guerrilla offering a possible a course of action (that he's not even sure about!) that retains the possibility of getting impaled through the hand all over again. The question was how to avoid spectator tampering. He wasn't asking me or anyone else to pass judgement on the type of effect he has chosen to perform. |

Godzilla,Your comments on T2 suggest you don't know or understand the routine and effect.
You wrote; "T2,may be a hard item to find!" (It's on the manufacture's website) You wrote; "Not sure if Randi Rain, makes them anymore!" (It's on her website.) You wrote; "It would save your hand" (correct) "but also let others know, you were not using the real deal, if smashed!"(incorrect and given how T2 works completely nonsensical) "You don't want to get busted, either!" (and there's no reason why you would.) T2 is a safe version of this type of roulette effect using an object that looks like it could do you some serious damage but with a routine that doesn't enable to harm yourself even if you actively decided that was what you wanted to do. You say you'll use 'Scorpion' which means you looking at, according the advertising blurb, 'fairly sharp' spikes, approximately 3/4 of a inch long to penetrate through your hand should you mess up. I think maybe it's worth having another look at Chris Cheong's hand.... ... and restating the point brehaut made; "make sure that whatever effect you are performing you can live with (literally) the worst case scenario." ... and then give Mindpro's 1st post in this thread some serious consideration too.

Mind Guerrilla; I'd be interested to know... In what way is having the spectator change the bags without you knowing and as a consequence slamming your hand down onto a spike not an example of losing track of the situation?
The man had just punctured a hole through his hand with a nail... do you really believe that proffering a suggestion, that you weren't sure of, to prevent the bags being switched was appropriate?... Even if your suggestion does help the bags from being switched, so what? It still leaves the danger of getting impaled again within the set up. I ask again... Is this really the kind of response to post to someone with a hole in their hand from doing this effect? You are right that Chris Cheong wasn't asking for anyone to pass judgement regarding performing an effect of this nature... and although my opinion is that there is a place for this kind of effect... I have suggested that this thread isn't the best place for that discussion. I even provided a link to a thread centred on that discussion so as not to side track this thread away from helping prevent this kind of incident from happening again either to the OP or anyone else out there who either performs one of these types of effects or is considering doing so.

I certainly appreciate all opinions,& advice of all factors surrounding such effect.
I definitely do learn a lot from this thread alone. As according to the doctor it is going to take about a month or so before it heals to a "function able" stage. However, I have got tons of shows lined up (in fact I'm in the airport flying off soon). Lucky for me, all of the shows lined up are mostly stage show, and my comedy Mentalism act could easily survived 1 handed and a mouth. (Hopefully). The question is as for now is simple, if anyone could ever live with the worst case scenarios if any stunt effect goes wrong - then one should just go ahead and keep doing it. Well, I can't. I'm also introduced by local performers of a version of idiot proof. Which I understand it is almost impossible to impale yourself this making the presentation seems more real. That too I might consider in the future. As for now, this effect will remain as a collection piece sitting on my shelf. There's no way I could ever describe the pain of it and the phobia fear of nails that has build into me overnight. |

Wow are we being troll and preached at.
I was going to back up what I had posted, but I really don't think I will bother as we seem to have attracted a serial corrector. Someone who places them above anyone else and puts anyone who dares to comment straight. (But sadly only to what they think.) Oh well, was a good thread with some good advice. I'm out!

In a thread where the topic is about trying to prevent more would-be Russian roulette performers from inflicting potentially very serious physical harm to themselves, or worse to others, I am perfectly happy, while there are posts being made that give ill informed, misleading and potentially dangerous 'advice', to take on the role of serial corrector.
It's good to hear that this thread has made Chris Cheong realise that in addition to the circumstances that lead to his hand getting impaled, just knowing where the nail is located isn't a guarantee that the same end result wont happen again,... and that brehaut's post, that made the point; that you ought to consider being prepared to live with the consequences of worse case scenario if such an effect goes wrong, has had an impact on him. On the Café you can expect to be chastised for taking the trouble to help prevent such potentially life altering incidents from reoccurring and for those giving out bad advice to want to defend it or become churlish rather than recognise it and retract or apologise for it. I was and still am quite aware, when making my posts in this thread, that they were likely to come across as being very heavy handed. They were meant to. I realise that in doing this I run the risk of making myself look 'mightier than thou', but I thought, and still think, that this was worth it in order to reflect the serious nature of the potentially dangerous advice being handed out that I believe, in good conscience, required to be 'serially corrected'. It's good to hear that Chris expects to make a full recovery in a month and that he has decided to shelve this effect. I am still concerned for him that he is even considering in the future doing a version that makes it almost impossible to impale yourself... I think that is foolhardy... but in the end that is, of course, his choice. Likewise I am happy that from reading this thread saysold1 has paused to reconsidered his version of this effect. Who knows maybe others will have reconsidered too. I'm good with that. (and the title of being this thread's serial corrector )
