Just keep in mind that cig magic is on it's way out more then it is popular. The reason for this is the changing ideas and views on smoking. Also keep in mind that smoking is not allowed in a lot of the places that you might like to perform your routine in. Just some thoughts.

Lewis Gansons Routined Manipulation has some good stuff.

Cigarrete moves can also be applied to other objects, perhaps something to consider if you hit problems with smoking bans/attitudes etc.

Yeah I know what you mean about smoking being on the way out I think smoking is horrible I don't smoke but I think Cig Manipulation looks good but I think that as long as people are still smoking Magicians can still do Cig Manipulation.

It might be better to learn cig manipulations to get the general principles down and trhen substitute the cig for another object that resembles it in shape. That way your still doing cog manipulative moves, but without the cig problem of performing as well as people's attitudes. It also would be much more creative.

Kyle

PS: May I ask your age? Just curious.

Hello Kyle , I like the idea of doing cig manipulation with other things what other things could you use? Some people have said you can use crayons but what sense does that make? I am 17.

Luke it is a matter of setting up your act around a theme so that any object you use relates to that theme. That way the objects make sense to the act and it also becomes more creative.

Alsao, because of your age, I would say stay away from the cig manipulation with cigs. because your young, it has more of a chance for others to see it the wrong way. They will be wondering why you are smoking at your age and will not enjoy tha magic as much as you want them to.

Other objects you can use are:
- Crayons
- Lolipops where the balls can be used for a billard ball sequence and the sticks can be used for cig type moves

Or you can even do cig magic but you change it around so that the message is a positive one and not negative. What I mean is that maybe you use your age to your advantage.

You come on trying to get a smoke and looking all cool and suave. But every time you try and smoke it or light it, it vanishes. Another idea is you have the cig, you move to the mouth and it becomes two. Your freeked out so you drop one but it happens again. You then toss it down but it becomes a silk. you open up the silk and there is a no smoking sign. So the whole routine becomes you fighting this message of no smoking until at the end you just give up and maybe eat a lolipop instead.

This way your still doing cigs, but your not lighting them at all and your giving a positive message across to the audience.

I like that idea. And agree, I think an audience would be much more accepting of somebody your age if you were displaying an anti-smoking message rather than a pro smoking one. Remember, you want the audience on your side, you don't want to be battling against them.

Exactly. This way you turn the tables a bit. You still get to use the moves you learned, but the message coming across to the audience is a positive one and not negative.

I no longer practice any cig manipulation. Smoking is fast becoming a very nasty habit in the eyes of many. Recently our Dallas mayor had a no smoking law passed for all restaurants and pubs. that's right, you can't find a smoking section in any of our restaurants.

Lighting up on a stage will soon be a thing of the past as well.

I agree. this is why I say study the moves of cig manipulation and then use them to carry over to other similar objects.

Hi, I like your idea but I have seen many people who are younger than me do well with cig manipulation The French Junior Champion came to stay with me over the he was 14 when he won most of his act was cigars and cigs he won with that act. I think he was too young to be doing that, I could maybe just get away with it because the legal age here is 16 but then again maybe not. Thanks for your advice

Best Regards,

I really would reconsider. I know you have your heart into doing cig manipulation, but as many have stated here, cig manipulation and cigs in general is on the way out. There is not much request for it nor is there venues that will allow you do perform that style of magic.

As Randy stated, smoking is becoming a nasty habit too many. Why would you want to alienate your audience right from the moment you step out on stage and produce a cig at your young age? It would only work against you.

Keep in mind that you are not to be doing this magic act to simply impress yourself, your friends or other magicians. You should do the act to entertain the audiences your performing for.

I feel that lighting up on stage will soon become a thing of the past as it already has in most areas already. In order to even perform with fire or matches, most places do not allow it or require a license just to use the stuff.

I am only stating this because I would hate for you to devote so much time into an act and then have no place to perform it.

One can certainly learn cig moves and study that form of manipulation. But in order for the audience to be on your side, I feel strongly that you need to change the approach you take with it. Change the negative notion into a positive one.

Kyle

PS: Why any 14 yr old is doing cig and cigar manipulation I will never know. Unless he was doing an anti smoking type of an act, it does not make any sense and I feel that audiences would be turned away from that. Just my humble opinion.

I personally cant see a 14 year ould out on stage smoking!! It would really turn some people off I am sure. I however love cig manip too and will also be another manipulator using it. You can listen to magic4u02 or go out and see for yourself. I guarantee most would not agree with him. It is simply a form of entertainment and an impossible one at that. Audiences are totally baffled when a real lighted cig appears and nevermind 20. Go for it!!

Just my own opinion. If you want to try it, go for it. I am just saying that it is not as easy to perform that way any more these days.

I agree magic4u02. Some say smoking is a bad habbit. But are you and others saying that if you come out an begin with a cig manip act you would be on the bad side of your specs? I totally disagree. Lance Burton has had great success with it. I guarantee no one would ever say O GOD HE HAS THAT DARN CIG IN HIS MOUTH AGAIN. There totally astonished and can only think of how it is done for a split second before there are 2 fans in each hand. Many, many smoke today. They are trying to band cigs in most places but they are also trying to make pot legal. are you guys saying we should use joints in out act?

GO for it dude, but practise often!

I'm in favour of the argument against smoking generally but to suggest that smoking would put you on the wrong side of your spectators is completly crazy. Ok heres scenario one: you go out for a few drinks with friends. is that not the most perfect situation for cig work??
scenario two: you're performing for kids and doing work with the magic colouring book, here's where you swap the cigs for crayons. its all about the situation you're in I know for fact if I pulled out a pack of crayons in the pub and started doing manipulations with them it would seem slightly out of place. and the same for the kids party with a pack of fags. Yeah, its a bad habit and many people will not respect a young person demonstrating how magic is somehow cool.

Luke, people may be able to win competitins with cig manips but the majority of the time the audience is full of magicians, almost definately judged my magicians, and thus they will appreciate the skill involved and be marking accordingly.

However, for a lay audience the situation will be diferent. There is likely to be young children present, would you realy want to encourage smoking amongst these? I can only imagine their parents wouldn't be too pleased if they were there also.

Do not alienate your audience. I'm not saying everybody who sees the act will take up smoking, but its just the idea of it all, and getting the audience to like you and ENJOY your show. These are only my opinions but I think there's some truth in there somewhere.

That's the nightmare that plagues me! Can you imagine devoting years of practice, becoming really good at it, just to be told you can't perform the act?
