Paul,
l We have been friends for a long time, and one thing I think magicians would be interested in, aside from all your great releases, is how you manage to enjoy performing, writing travelling etc consistently. Many magicians get tired of doing the same old stuff etc but you really are one of the most mindfully happy people I know. You seem to be able to absorb everything good that life has to offer and leave everything else behind...any tips for young guys on how to set themselves up for a long happy career ? cheers, Andrew Gerard
Well then...

Thanks Andrew - great question.
Firstly I hope the TV shoot is going well in Ireland - pass on my best wishes to Keith and ask him when he's planning a Canadian tour?? I'm happy because I love what I do. I love life and I don't take myself too seriously. That's one the many reasons you are one of my closest friends - we both don't take ourselves too seriously. Also we have a life outside of magic and so aren't ruled by it. We can turn it on and off without any worry. This year marks my 25th year as a full time professional. I remember years ago working with a well known act, who at the end of his life was very lonely and unhappy. He felt he hadn't been recognised by the magic community as much as he had wanted, yet he'd given his entire life to magic. I always thought I don't want to end up like that. For me family is always number one. It was how I was raised and being home for my wife and child is what keeps me enjoying life. Sure I travel, but often they come with me or my contracts are shorter. You read posts on Facebook about magicians whose entire life is consumed by magic and trying to prove something to the world. If you want to be famous or a celebrity magic isn't the place to be.If you want to become rich then magic isn't the place to be. If you have a VERY DEEP passion for magic and magic as an artform and want to make a comfortable living then magic could be the place to be for you. So - 1) Don't take yourself too seriously 2) Surround yourself with like minded people 3) Have a life OUTSIDE of magic - it will also help you be a much better performer. 4) Take time to smell the roses and watch a Chaplin movie every day!!

I just got down off a ladder covered in dust and read this posting an smiled. Funny thing, even when cutting holes in the kitchen ceiling for new lights, and getting ready to renovate this part of the house, and remembering that I must make the bed before my wife comes home, my mind is on magic. Is that what they call multi-tasking?
