Paul,
When I get an idea for a new trick or prop, I tend to launch into making a prototype straight away. Do you have a process you follow? How do you go about creating something from first idea through to a finished routine in your act? |

Hi Wayne
It depends - sometimes I phone you and ask you to build it:) I'm pretty much the same. I'll get the prototype made up and test it out. Pretty much everything I've ever released has gone through years of performances and different versions over the years. My Floating Broom is a great example. I had the idea and concept and had it built. It was a good year of rehearsing and finding the right music before it went in to my act. I've been working on a salt pour for many years and one day it will go in to the act, but it's still in early stages. After reviewing a lot of magic for VANISH I realise that a lot of the magic released today has not gone through thousands of performances. Somebody has an idea and wants to release it straight away. They make a flash video to get people interested and then once they've made their money from it they move on. That's the way a lot of these one off products are. They seem to be really hit and miss. My friend Ray Roch has just released a new version of his Impossible Box called the No-Gimmick Chop Box. He has spent years working on this and honed it through a lot of performances. It's a great example of releasing something that has been tested and worked out in the real world. That's my kind of product. My ideas come from the world around me. I'm inspired from the music I listen to, art, photography and other non-magic related items. People ask me how do I create my effects? I take inspiration from my surroundings. It's amazing if you open your eyes and stop thinking like a magician just how creative you can become. My advice is to expand your horizons and look outside magic to get your ideas.

G'day Paul
Thanks for the email letting me know you were chatting here for the week. I have read lots of the discussions and have found them most helpful - especial your reflections on the creative process above. Bob Latta (aka Troppo Bob) |
