I found this stuff last year and forgot about it until I got a cold and my friend at work reminded me of it. Turns out since I told her about it last year she drinks it all the time and makes it for her friends too.
It's a Korean thing. Lemons, ginger and honey. Chopped up and mixed up and stored in a closed glass jar in your fridge indefinitely. You just need to make sure the solids are COVERED WITH THE HONEY. I bought a new glass container at Walmart today and made some up. My recipe today was 6 lemons, 1/3 of a pound of fresh ginger as purchased- peeled, shredded with the big holes on my cheese grater and minced with my chef's knife. I used about 1 and 2/3 jars of the raw honey in the pics. Drink it in tea or just hot water. Leave your ginger more chunky if you want, but I like the heat from the ginger. According to the sites I found this on it eventually begins to jell like a jelly. Mine has never lasted that long. You could probably add some cayenne if you so choose to. Hope you try it! I like mine with Bigelow Earl Grey. I like to quarter and slice the lemons

Sounds like it would be soothing.
How much do you add to the tea?

The ginger is a good addition to the hot toddy that I have recommended for years: the juice of a whole lemon, an equal amount of honey, an amount equal to what you now have of a good spirit, fill the mug with hot tea, stir with a cinnamon stick, and sip slowly while inhaling the steam from a 3 quart saucepan that had been brought to a rolling boil, placed on a trivet in front of you, and had a scant 1/8 teaspoon of Vicks Vapo Rub added. With a big towel draped around your head and shoulders so everyone in the house will know they have to show some sympathy.

Why this is good....It a fluid, it contains honey which soothes the throat. I don't know about ginger other then certain herbs have been proven to have healing abilities.
Hot peppers are good. Do a search on "ten ways to stop a cold", and that provides lots of home remedies, Honey and tea are on most of them along with chicken soup and the reasons why they are good. BTW, there is no cure for the cold Virus, only ways to deal with it.

Sounds good but it would be much better with a shot of rum in it.

When I did Ren Faires and had a cold I would buy a cup of pickle juice for $1 (Every Ren Faire must have a wandering pickle vendor, it's in the by-laws). I've also made a concoction that included vodka, honey, ginger, red pepper, and garlic juice. That one was nasty.
Ginger tea I drink almost every day.

Critter- Maybe more places should have wandering pickle vendors. My wife is Mexican and her dad would make them drink a shot of Tequila with various similar additives. There is no doubt that a little alcohol helps you feel better when you are sick, hence NyQuil; the achy head, stuffy nose, sore throat, wake up on your kitchen floor medicine. lol My own theory is that even if alcohol doesn't necessarily help with your symptoms, at least you don't care as much.
Dennis- Agreed. I used to do the honey and lemon in tea thing whenever I got a cold. I like this because you can make it up and just have it around forever, it never goes bad. And I love chicken noodle soup, Jewish penicillin. I just made some last week Bob- It probably would be. Back in the day I'm sure I would have, I just don't drink anymore. I probably would have chosen some Captain Morgan or Myers's or who knows what else.

The alcohol is a vasodilator, which helps get the blood flowing. Many cold remedies are vasconstrictors, which dry out the membranes. That makes it easier to breathe, in the short run. However, those are the components which can raise your blood pressure.

I had a bad chest cold that my friend tried to cure with copious amounts of hard liquor once. It turned into pneumonia.

Sometimes we just have to suck it up and take the shot of penicillin

You want penicillin? Check this recipe for Portugese penicillin. It's outrageously delicious; and with all the kale, very healthy. A little off topic maybe, but not really since it is about feeling better when you're not feeling better.

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
