With the holidays coming up, I wanted to ask, are there any books that you would recommend to a amateur magician?

What books do you already have?
Do you have a specific area of magic you are interested in or just magic in general?

Mark Wilson - Complete Course in Magic
Henry Hay - The Amateur Magician's Handbook
Harry Lorayne - The Magic Book
Joshua Jay - Magic: The Complete Course

All of these are excellent general magic books for the beginning amateur.

This has no magic effects taught in it, but it is priceless, and a necessary investment as a base in magic.

What level are you at, how long have you been doing magic, how long have you been performing, what are your magic goals, what areas do you feel need particular input....then we can answer the question Smile

You can spend a fortune on books, but unless you know what type of magic you want to do, you really can't "focus" on a particular "grouping" of books. What is your interest? What type of magic do you do? What type of magic do you want to do? Answer these questions, and you will know where to focus your book buying dollars.

Hello Magicman Smile

You might want to check some of the excellent classic magic books being reprinted at very low prices by Dover Publications. You can build a fairly complete wonderful reference library chock full of material you will use for very little $.

As they say, much more BANG for your Buck and you can be assured the magic there is time tested and proven to be of value to you> no untried pipe dreams or filler there!

All the best

Because it was a major help in getting me started, if you're interested in card magic, the first book in the Card College series is an awesome start.

If you are looking to learn a thing or two about mentalism, I'd go for Annemann's Practical Mental Effects--super affordable with great thoughts and material to start you thinking like a mentalist!

Actually given your magic goals from the other forum you might want to ask the same question in the "bizarre" section

I already have many card magic books, but I need to work on showmanship and how to put a routine together.
