The Hooked Coin used to be standard equipment in a Magician's tool box. Often we made them ourselves if we had a source of surgical nails. I've even seen straight pins used.
There are so many tricks possible with them books could be written. Do these props even still exist commercially? I haven't seen one in many years. |

It is less painful to use a coin with a magnetic personality today and the same tricks apply, plus some new ones based on the new principle, and the new coins can be put into the hands of a spectator which you could never do with a "Hoo Coin."

I still have one of these. I never really used it much, especially as my SOH developed but it clearly can be very magical in use, just not as versatile as magnetic coins today, I would agree. But for that quick magical moment of now you see it, now you don't, it can still WOW! them. And I think there may be some small books out there somewhere as to using this once old favorite.

I disagree with some of the thinking here about this. Yes, magnetic coins have some versatility, but so do the hooked coins - you can plant them on the spec without the need for a magnet on your body somewhere.
Both have their uses, both have their own kinds of versatility. Some settings/effects are for one, some for the other.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

There was an in the hands vanish I did years ago with a Ho half. Very subtle and sneeky. Got the spectators every time!

I have a number of effects using a Hooker in various unique ways -- and a magnetically attached coin can serve as well. PM me.
It is a very underused device. When combined with a Shell-set, for example, you can gain a timing advantage and shift from "one ahead" to "one behind" at will.

An advantage to me for hooked coins over magnets is that they will also catch skin. If you work in coats with metal buttons, magnets can embarrass you.

Yes Bob, I just made some, drilled a hole, broke off a needle and used epoxy to glue it in. You don't want the "hook" out too far.
I am kind of amazed that with the sharp edge of a needle, you can do amazing vanishes that you almost can't do with glue. etc. THE NEEDLE CAN GRAB YOUR SKIN WITHOUT HURTING YOU. AMAZING. I have my magnetic holdouts, but there are some amazing things and vanishes (as well as planting it on a spectator), that you can't replicate well with anything else. I thought this was a "dead" gimmick. No longer. You want to look up : Some Thoughts on the Hooked Coin - James P. Riser, on google. |

Drop me a request ken@eversway.com and I can send a manuscript with several effects and many application ideas.
One can use a mag-coin as well for some, but for many the pin is essential. Ken

For instance, I was shocked that a hook coin made with a needle tip, can be put on the back of your left hand. No positioning, or pressing . when you turn the l. hand half way upward and pretend to grab it with the right hand, .... it can be resting, pain free on the back of your left hand.
Yes and to plant it on a spectator , that little hook is essential. So I plan to do some routines involving mag. coins/holdout and a hook coin . |

I have a partially legible 1932 manuscript in which a hooked coin is placed on the back of the left hand as part of a Miser routine
to set up an incredible delayed vanish. Later the Hooked coin is tossed into the air to be caught by the left fingers in a spectacular production.

Your booklet is incredible Funsway. I would highly recommend it to anyone. You are going beyond the basic uses of a hook coin. Wow.
Great job!! I am not trying to promote it. I got a copy for free. I am just stating my honest opinion. |

I have one. I've never used it. However, I've always liked the sneakiness of the idea of pinning the coin on a spectator's clothes. But I'd be wary of hanging a coin on any part of my skin. The risk of accidentally penetrating your skin would seem to outweigh any possible payoff.

Hi Ray, If you started playing with it, you would be surprised. today, I did a fake transfer. let it LIGHTLY GRAB (not penetrate) the middle of my right second finger. Did a false OPEN HANDED transfer better than any sleight to the left hand. I had the spec come closer, did the MOve to deposit it on the spec,.... then showed both hands empty . The person freaked out. Short sleeve. But boy did they freak out when I asked them to look at their shoulder, and it was "stuck " to their shirt vertically. Got it off and concluded a miracle. There is a lot more possible with some of these forgotten things than we might think . If you play w them a little.

Has anyone experimented with a rising coin effect using a hook coin? Along the lines of the old rising pencil (a favorite of Charlie Miller).

Excellent idea. I had thought of that too. The weight could be a problem though. But if you epoxied a pin to the inside of a [ coin, it could work. YOu would just switch the coin.
Great thinking. YOu could probably float a coin with the device I just mentioned. |
