I think the point is in this case he is selling his professional routine performed for many years and gets great reactions from his audiences. As you can see in the teaser trailer he is a very animated performer.
Yes this is an old puzzle effect that over the years I have done with pennies in a Bermuda Triangle formation. Also I think I read a reverse version somewhere where small cookies or animal crackers are used and instead of adding them, the cookies are eaten one at a time and the row totals stay the same. |

I've been waiting for this for a long time. I remember when two friends of mine saw a rare Giovanni lecture, and they called me after the lecture talking about The Pennies.
Giovanni is an amazingly successful performer, and if he wants to give me a lesson via dvd showing how he turns a simple trick into amazing theater, then I'm in. Can't wait to get it!

Magicman,
Wow! Great idea with something edible! Love it! I wonder if there are airplane cookies, instead of animal cookies... KJ |

Many have done the Magic Square and brought down the house. I also think a talented performer can take a so-so trick and turn it into a showpiece. 've seen performers mesmerize people with the color cube and ball and tube.
For the Pennies, I'm just not buying " shows you how a totally impromptu puzzle, a roll of pennies, and solid routine can bring the house down!". Do sponge balls and jump up and down and force people to give high fives and I guess you can claim you brought the house down. |

And yes, there are perfomers who I'd sit and listen to while they read the paper. But when someone is selling an effect, the effect has to count for something. Otherwise, we'd all be comedians instead of magicians. If you tell me it's the routine or script that's the real valuable thing, then why would "say these words" be any more powerful than "do these actions?" In the end, we ought to be more wary of things that are sold by a top tier performer - their gifts do what you say, they make "average" or even "old hat," into "miraculously entertaining." Unless they start selling their talent to go with the trick, I might as well stick to clever gimicks instead. |

I first learned this in R. Shane's Automata effect...i have often wondered, if you worked the stage - it would be interesting to do this using people instead of objects, having them call out their number as it were...

if you beleive your talents can stand up to this trick then buy it. If not then don't I don't believe the performer is trying to sell his or her talents with a trick. This is the way it's always been in magic. Always will be. |

Giovanni should sell a DVD about his performances style, and not someone else's effect.
when performing we should be our self and not a clone of any one.. . I have seen maguicians perform routines with word for word that is on the dvd to me this is not the magician performing but the magician on the dvd. Giovanni is a excellent performer and his style is what makes him this vinny |

I'll mention it again - David Harkey's 'Bermuda'. A fantastic, magical routine with a premise using this effect.

DVDs and downloads were usually attacked of facilitating the genesis of clones in our art today. Many times I have read on the café and heard on DVDs people saying that we should not copy the presentation and come up with our own. There are even creators who were criticized for being clones of their mentors. Yet, when it comes to selling a routine in a way that is aimed to 'copy the performer's presentation and you will rock the house', I find it contradictory.
So if today I take Kevin James's Floating Rose, can I sell and teach my own routine of it? Or for more subtle things relative to the floating rose, can I sell my own 'presentation' of the trick that fooled Einstein? If this was advertised as a theoretical DVD on routining, presentation, and construction, along with a live example of applying those theories to an existing routine, then the story will be different and I may have hoped on the wagon. However, this is named The Pennies. The first line of the ad reads "[t]he Pennies is a little known mathematical puzzle, that GIOVANNI LIVERA presentation takes it to a new level." We are clearly sold the mathematical puzzle plus the presentation. And before anyone comments on the psychology, many of the [good] DVD's today discuss psychology and routining applied to their respective pieces. But here, the puzzle can be obtained elsewhere for no cost (so there goes the first part of the product), and the presentation better not be copied as is (although may serve as a starting point and/or inspiration). We do get the theory but that is not the focus (as per the ad) and it is expected from someone like Giovanni to do so anyway (and I am sure he did that on his previous DVD releases). The only thing in my opinion that can put a twist on the whole discussion is to know if Giovanni is using the exact same trick or have structured it in a completely different way (ala Berglas or Harry Anderson doing the magic square) or the routine execution is exactly the same as in the sources provided in this thread. Given that information, I am sure we can all make informed decisions. All the best to Giovanni and everyone |

I'm pretty sure that one of the impuzzibilities book has an AWESOME book test that is performed with a dictionary OVER THE PHONE! It seems incredibly fair and like there are endless possibilities. There's also a pretty weir an intriguing counting trick where piles become BIGGER when cards are taken away and piles become SMALLER when cards are added.
I know it's a little off topic, but there's definitely value in the impuzzibilities booklets. |

Good question. I don't see David Harkey's 'Bermuda' anywhere on the internet. I would be interested in it too.
I will say, I am still curious about Livera's performance. Even though I might restructure it completely, perhaps there is something to be learned by his energy and approach to a specific effect. I like to do effects in a more humorous and light hearted way. However, sometimes it helps to get really serious and intense so that when the moment of comedy hits, it hits harder. I'm thinking there has go to be a really fun "Bermuda Triangle" effect in here, perhaps with food instead of coins, as Magicman suggested. I'm really liking that idea! Maybe someone who has purchased this DVD can comment on the value in picking up some performance tips from Giovanni that might be useful in applying to a different presentation. KJ |

Wasn't Harkey's Found In Bermuda from a Magic magazine ( maybe Genii ) issue in the 1990's?

I think I have one of David Harkey's books called Simply Harkey. I need to find the book. When I do, I'll see if this effect is in there.

I saw Giovanni do this routine as part of his show in the Close-up room at the Magic Castle some years ago. It was towards the end of his set (but not the closer) and got a strong reaction. Was a great vehicle for interacting and showcasing his personality.

The Harkey effect appeared in GENII or MAGIC several years ago, but I can't recall which, offhand.

Just a small point to note here-I CAN'T SEE HOW THIS IS LIKE A MISERS DREAM ON A MAT.
The Misers Dream is about producing coins seemingly at will from the air(after all it would be a misers dream to get coins for nothing out of thin air). I would say it's more like a MISERS NIGHTMARE as you are losing coins. As said in an earlier post, GIOVANNI IS AN EXCELLENT PERFORMER AND I AM SURE THE DVD WILL BE GREAT TO WATCH, AND VERY ENTERTAINING AND FOOLING. Also I have tracked down the method in a book as well. David Harkey's version appeared in Jon Racherbaumer's 'Theory In Practice' in MAGIC Magazine. The full title of it is 'Lost in Bermuda'.
