Here's my Version of it: I saw Bernstein do this in a lecture here in Houston back around 2006. I bought it, of of all the great stuff he did that night... to me... this was the show stopper. I've preformed it and it blows people away... even without the big personality effects... because it's a puzzle... an impossible puzzle. I took it to a triangle just because I wanted to shorten it so I could use actual PEOPLE as the pennies. Just drop some circles on the ground in a triangle shape and start telling the crowd they are about to vanish and reappear on the circles. I'm giving those hard working guys performing on the street... my version of here for free... go have fun with it and make so money.

It's not in SIMPLY HARKEY (unless I simply can't find it in the book).
However, as said already its in MAGIC MAGAZINE. To be specific it's the May 1996 issue on page 66. It's called Found In Bermuda in the Theory In Practice Section in JonRacherbaumers's Inside Out. Also take a look at Magic Magazine August 1993 for Understanding The Bermuda Triangle by Jim Steinmeyer. Mike Donoghue |

The Pennies arrived today at Saturn Magic and I've just finished watching it.
The principle I already knew (it's well taught on the DVD)so the main focus for me is on the routine. What you get here is how to turn this rather long winded routine if done conventionally into something that will engage a group. Up to 6 people are actively involved in the routine and it is quite clever how Giovanni has structured this so the routine carries speed throughout, thus making it more interesting and removing dead spots while loads of counting is done. As well as showing you his routine and how to bring it all together he also shows you what to do if it goes wrong or you make a mistake, covering all the bases so you can have confidence doing this. The routine is not one you would do at diner tables but one you would do with a group sat around a low lounge table like in the demo which happens quite often before or after a meal or in a bar. Overall there is good value here if you want a routine to involve a large group, you will be able to do this straight away after watching the DVD as long as you have enough coins to hand. This is not all about Giovanni's personality although he uses it very well anyone can quite easily adapt this to suit their style. We have it listed here http://www.saturnmagic.co.uk/new-magic/t......te-.html

"I saw Giovanni do this routine as part of his show in the Close-up room at the Magic Castle some years ago. It was towards the end of his set (but not the closer) and got a strong reaction. Was a great vehicle for interacting and showcasing his personality".
Performing is one thing,,,,,,, selling a effect that is not his IMHO is wrong..... vinny |

The effect may be old but Giovanni adds a lot of simple touches that can be applied to effects you already perform. He is a great teacher and leaves nothing out when teaching this effect.

I decided to get this and it came in the other day. I watched the DVD and gave it a workout. It could be a fun routine, but as presented, there are some problems to be resolved (IMO):
1. You must be prepared to entertain and engage people during this LONG, possibly repetitive routine. It has to be done at the right time and with the right audience. You REALLY have to make them your friends. 2. Toward the end, you have to take over one of the roles or IT WILL NOT WORK. 3. He covered a couple outs for other potential problems, but, unless I missed it (And I could have, the explanation did ramble), there is a "little white elephant" in the room that was not addressed. If you have someone with a bit of an affinity for math, a 5th grade education, and who doesn't keep the obvious to themselves, you have a problem. As I was watching this, I tried really hard to not have my magician hat on, and realized there was a simple mathematical problem that would be obvious to many. I think the routine is just too long to overlook that little problem. Without giving away the method, the problem has to do with "shared" pennies. I learned from Michael Close that for magic to be really effective, there MUST be NO explanation. Some may disagree, but I rather like that rule. For some in the audience, there IS an explanation, and for some, that may lessen the magic. However, I think there are solutions to these problems. Problem #1 and #2 are easily resolved. Just be aware of your audience and your ability to manage the routine. As for #3, below is one idea for a solution. I have been thinking about how to give this a twist for anyone in the audience who might see the obvious "white elephant" flaw. Start out by saying this is "Not a magic effect, this is a mathematical miracle." Then, at the end, turn the tables and give an explanation using magic: “Now, let me explain. When I showed my hands clearly empty, palm up and down, what you didn’t see is that some coins were transported magically. Let me show you.” Levitate a single penny from the table into the empty coin roll and have someone count the remaining 49 pennies as you place them all back into the coin roll. This method would require the use of one of the "add-on" things he talked about at the end of his explanation. If you have the DVD, you know what I'm talking about. With this setup, you are less likely to get someone comment on the "obvious mathematical problem". However, if someone does bring up the "white elephant" issue during the performance, tell that person “You may be onto something, but save it for the end when ALL will be explained for ALL to understand.” Give them a wink, and go on. This makes them feel like they are in the know until the end and what they thought was the explanation now doesn't make any sense. The smarter they are, the less it will make sense. Now, it is a mystery for all, just as Michael Close would have called for. If anyone has any other ideas or solutions to these “problems”, I would love to hear them. So, I am actually quite pleased with this purchase as it fueled some thought as to how to turn a mathematical "puzzle" into a magical miracle. Also, I think Giovanni does an excellent job during the routine with some little things he does to make the whole thing seem more puzzling. Obviously, there is a lot to be learned from Giovanni about how to raise the energy in a room. KJ |

I didn't mean to lessen the importance of #1 and #2. I think they are big issues. Giovanni does an excellent job with both of these, but for someone less prepared, these could cause the whole thing to collapse.

I think with a puzzle so old and with so many other published versions, there is nothing wrong with Mr. Livera selling his entertaining handling.
Can most of us pull off his incredible energy and performing style is debatable. But anyone can sell their handling or presentation of classics like Linking Rings, Cups and Balls, Egg Bag, Chop Cup, etc etc. |

Magicman1957,
I agree, Giovanni never claims that this is his, only his handling. He gives credit to just about everyone that has performed this before him. ~Steve |
