If they pay other entertainers to come in, then I expect to be paid as well. Otherwise, I'm the armature, and they are the professionals.

But I have rules. I will not donate a show to a charity that pays its staff, or a show where the other performers/workers are being paid. I will donate to local causes where the money goes to the cause, not the collectors. I put up my branding at donated shows, and they use my name (not MAGIC SHOW) in their promotion. But I find that the whole thing has to be based on respect. And respect generally means a willingness on their part to recognize that your talent has a monetary value. I may decide to waive that value, but they have to begin by acknowledging it. In my friend's case they placed no value on his contribution. After the show they asked him to do another event for them. Luckily he has some pride, and his response was as blunt as you might imagine!

Tony, I agree with you, and I know how you'd handle it, because we'd probably be watching a game together, by that point, handling it the same way. I was just wondering about him, but it sounds like he said 'no' the next time, so that's good. They should be embarrassed, man.

....and the 100th or 500th time it can still look fresh
if it fits you and be fresh to our audiences. I have a few musician friends that I perform with periodically. Whether it's been a week, weeks or a year if we play together it sounds great. It's even better if we have a rehearsal. At a regional FCM , I met the musicians that were going to open the big Saturday night show. I rehearsed with them for a couple of hours. People asked how long I was with the band. Classics yes. Phoned in shows No. Harris. Still too old to know it all
