Hey guys,

Suggestions needed please! We are in a large scale panto production this Christmas and need some ideas/help with a staging problem we have... The stage directions require us to "Enter and magically make disappear". That's all the direction we have been given. The character we need to make disappear is unfortunately not a limber 5'8" dancer, but a bulky 6 foot odd man. We have been thinking along the lines of a vertical asrah or Mascot Moth illusion, but there is no t**p available on stage and the complexities of Mascot Moth and the size of the character we need to make disappear, render this idea unfeasible. We were thinking along the lines of using a vertical shadow box as a disappearance, but the effect wouldn't be that strong we feel.

Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

How about a reverse Mummy Wrap:

Frogers,

Why don't you try a vertical shadow box with a deceptive stairs. Very easy to get the guy off stage to reappear in the back of the audience.

Something like this: http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm190/BYUDAD/DSC00483.jpg

Many thanks for the great suggestions guys, really appreciated. They all came up in our production meeting. We think we are going to go with a black art approach. We've come up with a design that we are going to submit to the tech department to build... Fingers crossed!

Black art seems simple, but achieving the proper lighting without making it look "contrived" is very complex, especially when it is a part of a larger stage production.

You should ask for help from a black art expert.

Black art isn't too terribly hard. It can be a pain but if you do some trial and error you can pull it off.
The mummy wrap requires a stage trap does it not?
