Today, credit and debit cards are very popular. People aren't carrying as much cash with them anymore. How are buskers dealing with this?

They can hand out business cards to their site and have the audience donate later or use card readers on their cellphones to swipe instantly.
It's probably best to sell something as a souvenir like a dvd or cd so they can "relive the moment forever".

Both post up bring up good points. I would like to add to them a little.
The technology to take digital payments is out there. its not perfect yet for how we would need to work. Here in new Zealand we have the first bank to offer somthing called pay clip. http://www.bnz.co.nz/business-banking/ca......od5DkAIg Selling souvenirs is a idea but in some locations trading is not allowed of this type. But when I was in Sydney musician were selling there DVD and they were make the money that way. But it was still cash sales. And yes there are some things out of our control. I feel that wwith were I Busk people espical teenagers still cary some cash. Also a lot of tourist visting carry cash as well but it is something we need to think about.

Something else worth thinking about is there options to use what busking offers that were not avible before.
For example thanks to this forum I met a fellow magician from Australia and when I am there and he is here we meet up and go busking and work on martrile together. So I have met a busker in a city before visiting it. I have also met some on here which I stayed with while in the north of the UK This was not possible a while ago. And recently it more avible as we travel due to smart phones. And so many forums and social net works. But what about the future and busking. There is option we could use something called crowd sourcing. You go to a web site and put up your idea this could be a idea up that you needed funding for. The ideas already up range from help with product development to a 11 year old tap dancer want to go to compete in the US. Could we as busker use the street to get people to follow us on social net work and support our travels and show through crowd sourcing. I like to make it clear the idea of setting up performing getting cash to live on is not going to go away. But this post is about what else can we do. It is important to remember the world is changing. I don't just mean the Digital age but also the way we think.

One way to get more cash is to have a pitch near where cash payments are still a major feature: near cash machines and at trading and market events where people largely use cash. A'm that we've already figured that out.
One way around the prohibition on selling while busking it to just ask for a donation for DVD, balloon animals, etc. and hope that people are fair in what they give. If that doesn't work, then I guess revert to selling stuff where you can get away with it. Christmas parades are coming and with it lots of people out on the street to watch and perform for.

I just went to the site http://www.bnz.co.nz/business-banking/ca......od5DkAIg and I'm thinking
Who is going to take the time to line up after a half-circle or full circle show to give a donation via electronic means? If someone walks off with your phone - oh, hold on, it will be "RUNS off with your phone?" if it's passed for use, how much is that going to cost a performer? I can't see me using electronic devices for hat donations. Then again, for most of my life I never thought I was going to be a magician working on the streets...

I'm not expecting a line up to use it.
I just want to remove any reason my audience not to "put money in the hat" d

There are cards out at the moment that have touch and tap rather than swipe. They also can pay for small amount with out entering a pin. So in the near future I think it will be possible to have a tap and go on your smart phone set at 5 Dollars and people could use that option. The 3 or 4 technologies are out there in main stream banks at the moment. And there begin tested and developed in the real world. Once all is smoothed out and the banks become less exclusive with there technologies this will become the norm.
This is what happened with the ATM machines and cash cards. the first one was introduced in 1969. Once people relised this was a cridtable idea. things started to move. And once thing were smoothed out and all bank were on board from mid 1970 to early 1980 A novety become just the way we do things. d the machines and options from the 1980 to now are very diffrent. Also things will move quicker with what were talking about. Once a winner in the tap device is decide in the next year I thing it be soon after phones have this as a built in option. Sorry to go on but I am a geek for this kind of stuff. And it is good to keep up with it and see new possibility.

I use a Square reader on the street while busking. You have to post the stickers that come with it and add it into your hat lines. Most people in the U.S. Are familiar with square. I add a line that I accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express through Square. Most of my tips with it have been $10 so a bonus is larger tips.
It's secure you never have their card info. |

I have a square. It's a GREAT little device, fast and efficient. Haven't had any problems with it and it opens up the door for those people that don't carry cash, but enjoyed the experience. Recommended.

Just a brainstorm:
What if you had your email, not your website, on display somewhere... "Ladies and Gentlemen- I hope you've enjoyed my show! If you have, I encourage you to join me in this new and exciting digital age by taking a picture of my email with your phone! That way, after this last effect that you'll remember for the rest of your lives, you'll be able to Paypal me ten dollars without having to wait in line!"

I personally just set up shop near a coffee shop and an ATM- it doesn't get me especially large tips- it just gets me cash.

The best part about having a Square reader is when you get one of those people that says, "Sorry, I only have a card." or "Let me go to the ATM, I'll be right back." You know they aren't coming back, 7/10 times, the other 3 they do. You can say, "Oh that's fine, I accept all major credit cards" and point to your Square sign. If there is a crowd still around dropping cash in the hat, they pull out the card every time. Otherwise they look like a ****** bag.
It is awesome because they are saying that because they feel like they should tip but don't really want to and it is their out, they don't look cheap in front of everyone but they still don't have to tip. Pulling out the Square eliminates that. I have also had people ask me at the end of a show when I didn't use my Square hat lines if I had one because all they had was a card. They actually suggested it and luckily I do carry one now. |
