How do or did you guys come up with your kids show? Did you come up with the theam from the effects you allready had? Or did you come up with a theam and build you show around that?

I usually buy the trick from what interest me from the effect read on the package. Performing is easy if I have the desire to perform it. Next I add another and another. Next I had a whole act together.

I don't have a theme for my show. Since I do vent I alternate between puppets and magic about 10 minutes for each segment. This keeps the show moving and makes it interesting for the kids. The tricks I do are ones I've done before that get great reactions. I'm always trying new ones and if I get a winner it gets cycled into the show. I try to vary the tricks, e.g., rope trick, coin trick, sponge balls, etc. and generally avoid having too many of the same type of trick. I might have one sucker trick like a die box but that's all. Hope this helps.

It's been SO long ago that I developed my show from scratch, all I can say is that is progresses slowly. I generally will come across a trick that intrigues me for some reason. I may see someone perform it, or read it in a book, or see a prop and think, "Ooo, I know how I can use THAT!" Then I add it into the show somewhere to see if it works. If I like it, I see how it fits theatrically into the show. Finally, I use it ... lot and lots and lots.
I have a basic structure to my show. Depending upon the audience, I may substitute effects. |

I start from my character. Once I know my character I can pick material that suits that character. My character has one strong advantage for me; it means colourful props don't suit me, and I can get away from the stuff other guys use. Joking aside, the show is character based rather than trick based.
My character suits magic, storytelling and other forms of entertainment. It means I can fairly much add anything in that does not contradict the character. Having said that, it is rare (almost unheard of) for me to use a commercially available routine. I use the gimmicks and create my own routines. Start with character. Then consider theme. Consider effects only at the end of the process.

Tony makes a great point. I guess that I just do that as a matter of course, but in truth most of us probably don't give it a second thought. If something doesn't fit you, don't do it. I once bought a dancing cane, for cryin' out loud! LOL! Live and learn ...
