This Monday will be Veterans Day. I just wanted to take the time to pay our veterans respect and to remember the fallen. Many thanks to all the veterans here on this forum! Thank you all for your service and much respect! CNN also has a news real going on for Veteran's Day as well: http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/08/us/veteran......pt=hp_c3 With much respect, gratitude and rememberance.
PS- I like what one of the vets said about the military in that it not only trains you to be good soldiers, but also great citizen. I think that's true. I believe the military does make you a better citizen. At least it did in my case.

On Veterans' Day we honor the living. On Memorial Day we give remembrance to the dead.
That minor quibble aside, thanks for your post and for your service. Personally, I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to serve and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. |

On Veterans' Day we honor the living. On Memorial Day we give remembrance to the dead. Well, I like to take the time to remember those who didn't make it home alive, even on Veteran's Day. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as well. I think ultimately in the end, it made me more responsible, gave me a better understanding of what self sacrafice and service really means, also gave me an understanding that my actions also effect not just myself but other people and that I have a responsibility to other people. I grew a lot in the military and I think it helped give me the confidence, the work ethic and the responsible mindset to start my own business and pursue my dreams. I did a lot of growing up in the military. Thank you for your service Bob! Many thanks and much respect!

A little trivia...
I used to live in Birmingham, AL, home of the first (oldest), and largest Veterans Day Parade. In 1973 I was at the magic shop in downtown B'ham, not realizing the parade was that day. With my car parked on the parade route, I found myself trapped, so I decided to just watch the parade with everyone else. Governor George Wallace was riding in the parade. This was about a year and a half after he had been shot. Still, the car he was riding in was a convertible (maybe he felt safer in Alabama). Anyway, his car did not stay with the entire route, and broke off right at the intersection where I was standing. As the police parted the crowd, and the car began to make its turn, his security people, who had been walking alongside the car jumped on the back. However, one of the men had a snafu to his situation. His pistol fell out and laid in the middle of the street for a very long time. You could hear a definite change in the crowd buzz. Everyone seemed afraid to move a muscle. After several minutes, a local cop came by, scooped up the weapon, and left. Also, I saw Charles Lindbergh fly overhead during the parade. I don't know why the parade was in October, rather than November 11, as is standard now. http://digital.archives.alabama.gov/cdm/....../id/5374 By the way... Veterans Day is spelled sans apostrophe.

Odd isn't it, considering that it's supposed to be OUR day.

Are you in this picture Israel serving in Africa? I wonder what these Marines were roasting over the fire? A rabbit? Probably a little too big for a rabbit.

I'll tell you another thing that military service taught me: commitment. The military is not a job that accepts job applications. The military only accepts commitments. So, when you start and run your own business, it's not a job and you don't get a business by filling out a job application or by writing up a resume. You get a business and build a business through commitment. Having made a commitment to a number of years to military service taught me the importance of being committed and making a commitment to something. It's kinda like the old Marines advertisement: "We don't accept job applications, only commitments." It the same with starting and owning your own business. It's not a job, it's a commitment. But being committed to something has value and that's what the military requires and keeping a business up and going requires: a commitment.
A lot of people join the military for the college money or to have a 9-5 job or to have a steady paycheck. Many don't realize that what they signed up for is not a job or college fund or a steady paycheck, but a very serious commitment with huge responsibilities and a potential to require tremendous sacrafices from them. Many who initially take the oath don't understand the true meaning of those words "I solemenly swear...." But some find out what it really means and the reality that what they signed up for was a commitment and not a job.

Veterans day honors living veterans and Memorial Day honor's those who gave Lincoln's last full measure of devotion. I'd bet most Americans don't realize that. In fact, when I was a kid growing up in NYC, public schools used to have the day off, and then it was called Armistice Day. It was celebrated on November 11th because the armistice between the Allies and Germany was signed in the 11th hour (11:00 A.M. of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, marking the end of the war. And then, it was to memorialize those of the Allies who were killed in the war. It was changed to Veterans Day after WWII and commemorated all veterans, living and dead, whether KIA or death by natural causes. But I still remember it being called Armistice Day in grade school.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
