My CSM (Customer Service Manager) stopped me as I was heading to my station tonight and gave me a new silver badge, a pin and a framed plaque that says I have been working for Wal*Mart for ten years.
Wow. I have never worked ANYWHERE for ten years! In some cases it was my fault, in quite a few the company had financial reversals. A couple of companies in New York City that I can't remember had financial troubles and I was released under the "last hired, first fired" rule. Two of them went out of business after wards. Gould was purchased by Westinghouse which three years later went bankrupt. Art Mold got purchased by Norwood Promotions which gutted it of everything of value and fired everyone. (You could, if you wanted to, apply for permission to go work for them in Minnisota (I thought they were in Illinois or Indiana, maybe they moved.) I really wanted one of those places to be the one I retired from some point in the future. But now I've been at Wal*Mart for ten years. I'm still having trouble working my brain around that!

Congratulations Ed.
Ten years is a long time. I bet you worked in many departments there. Tom

Congratulations Ed. Loyalty goes both ways. From Employer down to Employee up. Ten years looks like mutual respect for loyalty. I wish you continued success that will pave the way for a retirement from a place you want to retire from.

Ed: Based on many of your prior posts about your time at Walmart I was wondering, were you soliciting congrats or condolences about your time served there?

Just whining. I'm very grateful to have had a job for the past ten years... I just wish it hadn't been this one.
One more year and I'll be making what I was making at Art Mold before it was "Engulfed and Devoured!"

You should write book about it Ed - Ten Years a Slave – and they will make film about you 150 years from now.

Ed: Based on many of your prior posts about your time at Walmart I was wondering, were you soliciting congrats or condolences about your time served there? I was wondering that as well. If I was Ed, I would be asking for condolences. Don't take that the wrong way Ed. Sometimes you have to take a job like Wal Mart to pay the bills. If I was you, I would try to develop some kind of side business in something you really enjoy and who knows, maybe it will take off and you can do it full time. Beats the hell out of working at Wal Mart where you are just an expendable number to the company. I don't mean to come off as rude when I say that, but really, that's how a company like Wal Mart views their employees.

Oh, there are wonderful opporutnities at Wal*Mart. You can go in as a stock man and in ten years you might be an assistant manager if you have the chops. I don't. I tried for Customer Service Manager once and failed the written test. Later, looking around at exactly what the CSMs go through, I figured I dodged a bullet on that one. I'm not management material. One of my regulars said; "You've been here awhile, how come you're not running the store?" and I replied; "If I were running the store, we'd be circling the drain by now."
Tommy - If I write my memoirs, I'm going to title them; "Memoirs of a Professional Failure" because when you get down to it, that's the only thing I've ever really succeeded at! Yeah, I know, more whining. I'll try and stop now.

What is success? It seems to me, it's what you get, when you achieve “your” aim. Real failure though is when one has no aim or there is no aims left. One should never stop trying achieve something or other. Even if you fail, at least you are a trier.

Success is a state of mind. It's realizing a worthy goal.
If Ed is a failure it's only because he 'thinks' he is. He could become an instant success by simply changing his mindset. Funny how it works like that.
Wal Mart is a great place to work for many people. I know several happy Wal Mart employees. Ed, be proud of you award. And remember what the wise man said, "Love your job until you no longer need it." Tom

Ed, keeping a job for ten years is not failure. It says a lot about you. Congratulations.

Ahh Ed, you are not a failure. Figure out what you really love to do and pursue doing that. You might have to work at Wal Mart while you pursue your dreams so that you can pay your bills. If retail is honestly what you enjoy, then continue to go after management positions at Wal Mart. However, if it is not, figure what you love to do on your spare time and start a business doing it. But you are not a failure and always be proud of who you are! Plus, working 10 years at Wal Mart shows you have commitment and that's something to be proud of. However, if Wal Mart is not a job you enjoy, find ways to pursue what you love to do. I enjoy being a businessman and it's hard work, but you can create a business and build it doing what you love to do. You could do the same thing and I think you can do it if you put your mind to it.
