My goal is not to bum you out Ed, however, I think it's important to consider your future and consider what you love to do and how to get ahead. I know from experience that working a job that pays well but you hate is not a winning combination either. Money is important, but it's not everything. Ideally, you want to work a job or field that you love to do and be able to make good money doing it or eventually make good money doing it (it does take time to build and grow a business). Because what I am telling you is the truth. And it's pretty depressing when you consider that Wal Mart Employees in some stores are having to hold a food drive to benefit each other. Here is the link: http://business.time.com/2013/11/18/walm......ployees/ .

Now, I am not trying to bum you out, but it's important to see things as they are. You have commitment and you held a job and you should be proud (you should always be proud of who you are). However, you have to consider, is that what I really love doing? Is this job going to help me get ahead? In Corporate America, their is very little stability and few companies have loyalty to their employees, meaning you could work for the same company for 30 years and get axed with very little to show for it afterwards. I know of some instances of this happenning to people. This is why, in my opinion, owning your own business is the way to go and going after what you love to do is best, because if you hate what you do, you won't put your heart into it and you are less likely to be good at it and you want to be good at what you do in your business.

PS- Happy Birthday Ed! My sincere best wishes.

You job doesn’t have to define who you are and what you really do. I’ve been at my nine to five for nearly nineteen years now. The job I had before that was seven years and counting. I’ve never made magic my “full time” occupation. But when people ask what I “do” I tell them I’m a magician. It’s who I really am and what my life is focused around.

Working my “job” allows me to be the magician I want to be, do the magic I want to do. Since my nine to five pays all the household expenses and living bills all of the money I make doing magic can be poured back into my magic business. I can invest in tricks, books and go to magic based events that I might not be able to afford if I was making my sole income from magic alone. Plus I can turn down the work I don’t want and concentrate my efforts on doing the type of magic I enjoy doing.

So there are definitely benefits in having a job to supplement ones magic lifestyle. Don’t seek identity in your day job. It is only there to afford you the opportunity to do other things. True, it would be more advantages if you had a better job than working for Wal-Mart. I worked for years in retail and know what drudgery it is, especially at this time of the year. It took me several years to not feel kind of weird having the day, heck, the whole weekend after Thanksgiving off and being able to go home early on Xmas eve. Getting all the Federal holidays off is still a thrill as well.

But Wal-Mart is where you ended up so you’ll have to make it work for you. At least you can get all of your playing cards for less with your employee discount. Plus with ten years under your belt you should have a certain amount of seniority so you can schedule the days and evenings you need off for shows and other magic events in your life.

You are a magician first and foremost. Working at Wal-Mart allows you the ability to be the one you want to be. The pressure is off and you can do the magic you want where ever you want. Because you don’t have to make your living performing magic.

Even though I've always had a day job I’ve performed magic in England twice, done a Ren Faire in Guam. I’ve won multiple magic awards, lectured at several clubs and conventions, performed (a couple of brunches) at the Magic Castle, appeared onstage at Two MAGIC Lives, Three PCAM’s, Magi-Whirl and the IBM Convention in Norfolk. I’ve spoken six times at Jeff McBride’s Magic and Meaning Conference, written a monthly Column for MAGIC and do product reviews for MUM. So don’t let anyone tell you that having a “regular job” is any sort of hindrance to ones career in magic or that you are not a “real magician” because you don’t do it full time.

You can be the magician you want to be even though you still work at Wal-Mart. It’s just a job, it’s not who you really are.

Thank you Payne. That was very strong and I hope I can keep it in my heart. I am trying to rebuild what I lost quite a few years ago (pre-Walmart) when I was evicted and my stuff was put into two storage unit companies. I could only pay for one and the magic props went into the other.

Again, thanks. I'm trying to take your advice, I only hope it doesn't take another ten years.

Quick note... so far, it HAS taken another ten years. I got my GOLD badge and lucite plaque celebrating TWENTY YEARS back in 2023! Between my own lethargy, financial disasters leading me to drain both the 401K and the stock market, and my wife's problems with the amputation of her toe and the resulting infections that have had her in and out of hospitals since July of 2025, magic is still in the background. I went on Social Security at 59 and six months. I went part time at Walmart and changed my schedule to arrange Sundays and Mondays had to be capped off at 6:00 (busses stop at 7:00 on Sundays and Holidays) and I ALWAYS have Fridays and Saturdays off. However, I have not had money to rebuild my show. I am still working and planning, but I'm still working on this.

Understand me, I am not blaming Walmart, or anyone else, for this situation. This is all on me (and to a degree, bad luck in the form of injuries and financial problems).
