Well I am proposing committing Hara-kiri while shouting “death before dishonor” before buying goods made in China, but it's a free country, and you can stay married to China if it makes you happy.

I'll bet the device you are now using to post your comments here on the Magic Café was made in China, or at least many of the parts were.
I think it is pretty much impossible or at least extremely hard to live without parts or item's not made in China.

Walk around your Home and see how many things don't say "Made in China" or better yet, see how many things say "Made in U.S.A."
difficult at best.

From a fortune cookie at a fine Chinese restaurant. China is a fine place, a very fine place.

I don't think I have anything made in the big slave camp communally known as China, but my wife might have sneaked something in from there when I wasn't looking.

I got one from my boss. If you are your own boss, then make one up for yourself and have a ceremony where you give it to yourself. You probably can't get a pin made, but I'm certain you can have a document printed up and put in a frame.

Ed,

It sounds to me that you're feeling the weight of time. I've felt the same for a long while.
You're a creative person and any time a creative person is stuck in a place where they can't express themselves it weighs on them. Ten years is a lot of weight. I have many friends like that.

I myself recently lost a job I hated, but kept because of the money. I kept my sanity by painting, drawing and keeping company with like minded people, as well as performing and twisting on the side.
Now I'm out on my own and happier BUT more stressed about money.

In your case I'm a little confused. You're respected here so you must be a good magician. Doesn't performing bring you satisfaction? I'm relatively new here so I don't know your'e situation too well.
You obviously don't like your job but stay since it lets you pay the bills. As people here have stated that's something to be proud of. Keeping body and soul together these days is an accomplishment. Take pride in staying the course but focus your MENTAL energy on what you love, which seems to be magic.

If you're not performing get out there! If you are think about ways to improve. Learn a new related skill.

As far as you're wanting to "retire" from a place, if Walmart provides a pension then at your age you kind of have to stay. If they don't then you should focus on earning as much as possible now and forget about the concept entirely since it's moot.

One way or the other you need to change your mindset. Simple but not easy. I know.

Good luck man.

I think if I am ''respected'' here, it's more because I try to treat everyone well and not start, or fuel, flame wars. As a magician, I realized a long time ago that I was rather mediocre. I'm not bad, but I don't feel that Chris Angel or Lance Burton are sitting up nights worrying about me taking bread out of their mouths.

In war soldiers used to get a share of the spoils of war, but some bright spark came up with the idea of giving them a silver star and keeping all the spoils for themselves. Good deal eh? Likewise Ed soldiers on in the trenches at Walmart and gets his silver star without a share of the spoils there. I have a lot of complaints about working for Wal-mart, but I do know something that ''Wally World'' does that I've never been part of before.

If we make our numbers [a percentage based on how well we did last year] each quarter, we receive a bonus based on a percentage of how well the store did as a whole.

Last quarter, it was about three hundred dollars, for each full time employee.

Also, when I started, they started a 401k plan in my name and put money into it each month for me. NOT - I hasten to add, money that came out of my check but money that Wal-Mart deposited each week.
When I was ready, I started adding to the fund. Currently, it's at thirteen thousand dollars. I can't touch it until 30 days after I no longer work for Wal-mart -OR- I reach 59 and one half years old.

You don't have to be a Chris Angel or Lance Burton to be great or to be a magician for living, nor do you need to go to Las Vegas or Los Angeles. You just have to be yourself. You just start right where you are located and their is plenty of work for everybody! Their is no need to take bread from other magicians. Yes, their is some competition, but yet, their is still plenty of work for everybody. I sometimes refer work to balloon twisters and other magicians because sometimes I can't do the gig while other magicians can. For example, I am a close up magician, so sometimes a client is looking for a stage show or is looking for both a stage show and close up magic. In this case, I find a magician with a good stage show and refer the work to them and if they are looking for a close up magician in addition to the stage show, we work it out to where I do the close up magic.

To be honest, my bet is Ed, that you really, honest, without question, a better magician than Chris Angel. Plus, think about it this way Ed. Do you have more talent than Kim Kardashian? HELL YEAH YOU DO! What does she do to get paid millions of dollars? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! She has no talent! So, you see, Ed, you can do this too and you got more talent than Chris Angel and definately more than Kim Kardashian and if they can do what they do for a living, you can be a professional magician too. It's all you and it's all up to you. The thing is, you just can't get down on yourself and you can't give up. Just stay persistent. Taking action and staying persistent is key to success.

Heck, I would much rather hire you to do a show for a party I am having than to hire Chris Angel or have Kim Kardashian to make an appearance and I am sure this is how most people would feel. I think you will discover that if you get out there and really try. Just stay persistent, don't give up and take action. You got to be action oriented and you got to stick with it, even when the going gets tough. And being a good guy that most people like goes a long ways too Ed. People do business with people they like and they got to like you first before you can even begin to entertain them. Likability goes a long ways.

I'd rather have Kim Kardashian here. I can do my own card tricks.

But I'd take Ed over Chris Angel.

I both like and respect you Ed. I feel for your combination of disappointment and accomplishment. Ed, you're one of the guys I'd like to meet for coffee one day.

Enjoy both the achievement of 10 years service, and the melancholy it brings you too. Both are an important part of you today.

Congratulations Ed. 10 years is no small accomplishment. I too view you as an honest and reasonable guy. And your 10-year employment record shows you are stable and dependable. All things to be proud of. And a 13K 401k and quarterly bonuses is more than a lot of people have earned. Keep up the good work.

We can choose to be happy or not.

Circumstances are just that.

There are unhappy millionaire superstars and happy road sweepers.

Ed, we travel this way only once...

May the next 10 years be even more prosperous and full of happiness for you and yours! Smile

I'm happy for you! Smile
