I'd love to sit down with Tommy and Al and feed them a whole lot of booze.

I remember too

You are just instigating trouble now. I prefer to ignore Tommy like most everybody else here with the exception of the Café staff who carefully dissect every word our irreverent British friend types.

Ed, I worked for Piggly Wiggly for ten years and one month. That was back in the 70's and 80's. During that time Wal-Mart was expanding their food side of the business and they recruited two of the guys I had trained. Both moved on up with the company fairly fast. Both are big wheels in AR now, so if you ever need a good word, let me know.
So I know firsthand how a 'job' can become boring and that daily grind can get tiresome. But honestly, that was a great experience for me. Some of my better days were spend there. Lot of good memories from that period of my life. That was also a period of my life when I did magic on the side. So having a good hobby or side business can help. One thing Ed, you may want to think about putting all you can into your 401 now, you have reached that point where you can really see it start to grow. It may surprise you how fast it will grow over the next few years. Hang in there, better days are ahead. Tom

I happen to like tommy, as do lots of other folks in here. While we don't always understand his thinking, his presentations, and his humor, or even agree, he contributes wonderfully to The Magic Café. No one understood his Frank Ifield reference; I did. That was contributory. Your statement that "most everybody else here" ignores tommy is simply balderdash. Now go look up that word Al.
My sincere apologies to you Ed, but some things do need to be addressed when they are so outrageous.

You have no "burning platform" forcing you to take action. You've settled into Wally World, its letting you live in a lifestyle you find acceptable. And theres nothing wrong with that. But it appears you've begun to wonder if theres more out there. The scary thing is figuring out exactly what that is and taking the leap. Many wont jump unless the platform under their feet is burning. You have a lot going for you...10 years at a job shows good work ethic. Youre respected here at the Café. You enjoy talking with people. And you go to parks and perform for total strangers. That alone is something very people could every do. Congrats on the ten years and good luck with your future.

I don't hate Wal Mart. I'm grateful to them for the job. I just never realized it was going to be the longest job I've ever held! And if I had a choice, I'd rather not be there. I'd rather be sitting behind a computer terminal in an office. But, after losing a job to liquidation, another job to bankruptcy, and other jobs in NYC to financial reversals on the part of the companies, quite frankly I'm actually afraid to trust my future to a different company.

You can own business's, without giving up your job, because you can employ people to operate them, you can be a silent partner and so on.

You job doesn’t have to define who you are and what you really do. I’ve been at my nine to five for nearly nineteen years now. The job I had before that was seven years and counting. I’ve never made magic my “full time” occupation. But when people ask what I “do” I tell them I’m a magician. It’s who I really am and what my life is focused around.
Working my “job” allows me to be the magician I want to be, do the magic I want to do. Since my nine to five pays all the household expenses and living bills all of the money I make doing magic can be poured back into my magic business. I can invest in tricks, books and go to magic based events that I might not be able to afford if I was making my sole income from magic alone. Plus I can turn down the work I don’t want and concentrate my efforts on doing the type of magic I enjoy doing. So there are definitely benefits in having a job to supplement ones magic lifestyle. Don’t seek identity in your day job. It is only there to afford you the opportunity to do other things. True, it would be more advantages if you had a better job than working for Wal-Mart. I worked for years in retail and know what drudgery it is, especially at this time of the year. It took me several years to not feel kind of weird having the day, heck, the whole weekend after Thanksgiving off and being able to go home early on Xmas eve. Getting all the Federal holidays off is still a thrill as well. But Wal-Mart is where you ended up so you’ll have to make it work for you. At least you can get all of your playing cards for less with your employee discount. Plus with ten years under your belt you should have a certain amount of seniority so you can schedule the days and evenings you need off for shows and other magic events in your life. You are a magician first and foremost. Working at Wal-Mart allows you the ability to be the one you want to be. The pressure is off and you can do the magic you want where ever you want. Because you don’t have to make your living performing magic. Even though I've always had a day job I’ve performed magic in England twice, done a Ren Faire in Guam. I’ve won multiple magic awards, lectured at several clubs and conventions, performed (a couple of brunches) at the Magic Castle, appeared onstage at Two MAGIC Lives, Three PCAM’s, Magi-Whirl and the IBM Convention in Norfolk. I’ve spoken six times at Jeff McBride’s Magic and Meaning Conference, written a monthly Column for MAGIC and do product reviews for MUM. So don’t let anyone tell you that having a “regular job” is any sort of hindrance to ones career in magic or that you are not a “real magician” because you don’t do it full time. You can be the magician you want to be even though you still work at Wal-Mart. It’s just a job, it’s not who you really are.

It's good advice from Payne as well. There is nothing wrong with holding a job. However, me personally, I feel that I leave my future in the hands of a company or somebody else. They can sell out to the highest bidder and then the highest bidder who buys them out could lay you off. Then, they could go bankrupt and then you lose your job and benefits. Then on top of that, you could deal with a !@#$%^& boss who fires you because you have toe jam and it doesn't matter how much you have contributed to the company, you're still fired because you had toe jam.
Companies owe you no loyalty and you can be fired at a mere whim and you have no recourse and this can happen anywhere. Plus, dealing with fellow co-workers who stab each other in the back to get ahead in the company. It's no way to treat each other and it's no way for anybody to get ahead. To me, I feel more stable owning my own business and taking my future and destiny into my own hands rather than trusting my future to people or a company who do not have my best interests in mind. By working for somebody else, you then entrust your future and destiny into the hands of people who do not have your best interests in mind at all and who will leave you out to hand and dry in a minute. So, to me, I personally feel more comfortable working for myself because by working for myself, I know the decisions made will take my best interests into account, plus, I will do what I love to do rather than becoming some sort of replaceable spare part in a machine who has a task that does not involve what I love to do and then I just become some sort of automaton. Just doesn't seem to be the way to go for me.
