Audiences are not going to stay around for that kind of arrogance in performance

To each his own as to presentation. Patter has its place as exactly a part of the ambient "distraction" that you mention. It's a part of magic, part of the moment, theatrics, etc., that can invite as well as infuriate at times, I guess. Still, to each his own. Many magicians don't say a word and render great magic, such as Ponta The Smith and the great, Mickey Silver, and check this guy out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnoSDgKVTys Ain't too many people out there doing this stuff to the level that these guys are performing in real time, and their audiences never leave wanting or disappointed. I guess the goal is in some way to setup the encounter, and it can happen verbally and or non-verbally just as well, sometimes even better. I happen to like good flowing patter (but not too long) but have heard long winding examples of patter that are just too fat for the moments at hand. Some magis use a verbal story-telling in everything they do, and that can be quite monotonous, sorta like when Ed Norton on the old HoneyMooners show would begin every song on the piano with a quick run of "Swanee River," and it used to drive Jackie Gleason crazy! But when patter is done in a pithy, off the cuff sorta way, as per the encounter, it can enliven the moments and help the specs to better understand and enjoy the magic. I like doing it both ways, depending on the situation, and absolutely love doing magic to a good beat, jazz included. I respect you just being you…Just who else could you be? And everyone else is who they are as well, thinking the same exact thing. And it's all good, just as it's suppose to be. Again, welcome.

The highest paid, long lived, and WATCHED magicians do not say a word during their most impressive performances; Copperfield, Lance Burton, Slydini, and S&R.
Watch the tapes .................. again. Once they start chatting about going to China to find. . . bla bla bla. . .. and some drawn out story, the magic . . . . is gone. Now, of course, during . . . "Magick", a story is the only thing that keeps it together to make any sense at all. When the teacher starts talking about "Johnny had 7 apples and gave 3 apples away but is riding a train at 60 miles per hour and leaves the Boston station at 6pm, How many apples . .. . ." Well, I just lost interest and cant follow the story when drinking at a night club. Just cant follow story lines while drinking, laughing, ordering drinks and snacks in a Comedy Club. In the real world, people can't or wont pay attention to a bunch of words. Even Tango doing coins is .............. so much better to music. Also, not everyone in the audience can hear at the same level. Most people over the age of 40 have "some" hearing loss. So they MAY be nodding their heads and smiling but they really have no clue to what was really said by the performer, unless, spoken very slowly. . . and carefully and not too twisted of lines of "patter". All "patter" is lost at that point. For CHILDREN, it is different. Their attention span has to be put. . . back on course, several times during a show. Also there are language differences. Some performers from the deep south, . . . cant tell WHAT they are saying the accent is so great. Come to think of it, also 90% performance to music: Liebenow, Pavel and Buckingham. Once the show starts.......... Kevin James....... all music on the really entertaining pieces. |

Off the cuff and maybe funny. . . . that's what most magic patter needs ! But PITHY has got to be first on the list. |

I think the differences in opinion here are more about performance venues. Performing silently to music in a strolling situation obviously doesn't make any sense and having patter that involves the audience is preferred. In contrast, in parlour settings, if it is just a trick that requires watching, then patter can just come off as the magician describing the trick.
Most of Slydini's videos involve patter; even for the paper balls for a larger setting, he is still talking to his volunteer. The only silent one I've seen is his cigarette routine, which is a manipulation style routine and normally silent. And of course there is also Derren Brown and other modern mentalists who have to speak during the magic So don't think it is that clear cut. |

I personally have scripted a patter which I use for both 3 Coins Across and 3-Fly routines. The theme is based on the modern practice of Online Fund Transfers between two Bank Accounts. If one wants to transfer money between two of his accounts, one in Bank of America and another in Wells Fargo , certainly he's not gonna stack cash in bundles and carry those all the way to the bank. Then I just proceed to demonstrate how this online fund transfer works, with my left hand as BoA, and the right as WF.
This patter has served me well, as the spectators get to see something which they themselves do all the time, but it being demonstrated like this is beyond explanation. In case I choose to do the International Coins Across routine, e.g. with Kennedy halves and English Pennies, Wells Fargo just gets changed to Royal Bank of Scotland LOL....
Best,

I found a trick in an old book where one coin in a group suddenly appeared in the other hand. And it works. But as written it was kind of a one-time thing, almost a prank... Then if someone says do that again... which would be fine if it had not already happened.
... means there's some room for personal/ad-lib in the script. :)
...to all the coins I've dropped here
