Hey gang!
I tried making my first pendulum in a bottle and it didn't go as well as I had hoped. I'm hoping you fine gentlemen can help me out. According to the books that I have the pendulum is suspended approx 2 inches from the botton of the bottle. Question 1. Is it 2 inches form the bottom of the bottle, or 2 inches from the top of the dimple in the bottom of the bottle, OR do I use a bottle with no dimple at all?? I'm using thread. Is the composition of the cord important? Is the weight of the pendulum important, so long as it dangles and the cord is taut? I tested the bottle on my dining room table and couldn't get it to move without obvious movements of my hands. I should probably use a card table for this, huh? I corked the bottle using a wine corker. The top of the cork is fluch with the top of the bottle. Is this good? All advise is welcome and appreciated! Thanks!! Snoogans! |

This is the type of jar I use - I glued a small piece of dowell (actually cut from a shisk-ka-bob skewer) into the lid and hung the pendulum from it. You can get those jars at Michaels or Hobby Lobby for about $2.

Looks cool, in which kind of settings do you use this kind of pendulums?

Snoogans,
Try different tables and different lengths of string. Different lengths of string will resonate at different frequencies. The type of bottle shouldn't matter as much. |

Depending on your setting holding it on a tray or a hardback book can get results. Wine bottles or flat jam jar types should work. Length depends on whether you want it to hit the side. If its a wine glass and you want it hitting the side you want it high up before the bottle opens wider.

I'd say the length from the top is more important than the distance from the bottom. Try different lengths.
BTW, there is a great version of this in Magic & Showmanship. Barry |
