Is this the place to post a question about reels and pulls, i.e. things that draw a small object quickly and (you hope) unseen under your jacket or up your sleeve or somewhere? I have a big problem with such devices. As the object is drawn under my jacket, it makes the jacket "flutter" in an obvious way and makes a noise when it hits my body that surely everyone hears. How do you use such a device unobtrusively? How do you keep the object away from the obstructions of your clothing and silence the "whap!" when it hits your body? Thanks in advance.

What kind of device and what kind of objects are you working with?

I'm using a reel, clipped to the inside right breast pocket of my jacket. The object to be vanished is a quarter.

Do not allow the 'holder' containing the object to snap clean back to the reel.
Place a safety pin around the line and pin it roughly half way down from the reel- that way the holder will stop at the pin and not snap back to the reel. This will both eliminate the noise and help to eliminate the flutter.

Actually you are handling it wrong. A real is not used as you are stating, to just fly from a distance, it should be released at the edge of the coat. If you want to let things fly, then use elastic, not a reel.

And, (2) the maker of the trick I'm trying to do claims you can do it without a jacket on, clipping the reel to a rear pants pocket. I cannot see how you could do that without the cord being seen, but even if you could, it would still in that case be a matter of letting the coin "fly from a distance," as you say. |

I think it would make a noise when hitting the safety pin, too, wouldn't it? The reel I am using has "bushings" (bits of rubber?) attached to it so that, the manufacturer says, there will be no noise when the coin hits the reel -- but, as I say, it is the "Whap!" when the coin strikes my body that is the problem. Do I have to have a straight, unobstructed path to the reel, so that the coin doesn't have to bounce off my body on the way to the reel? |

You should be able to use a pull or reel in short sleeves - IF - the tension is not too loose or too tight - AND - (a big motion hides a small motion) you may need to turn a bit to hide the motion. remember to turn the same way a=t other times during the performance too Also. If you have a guilty look on your face, the spectators my start looking around. A smile and doing the move "on the offbeat" might work wonders. As for noise. Speed of the retraction may be a factor. What the others are trying to tell you is to put a buffer before the termination of the action. This may be a rubber washer, a soft plastic tube the cord runs through or by putting the reel all the way down your pocket. This is something you have to play with. Straight path: This depends (again) on the tension and the diameter of the path the object must take and if you are wearing a heavy jacket which will slow the action and make it quieter. Funny how such a small gimmick involves so much physics.

But, it is not any noise when the coin strikes the reel that is the problem -- it is the noise when the coin strikes MY BODY on the way TO the reel that is the problem. I don't see how to keep the coin from striking my body on the way to the reel. That is why I ask about the straight path to the reel: if that path is unobstructed, then maybe the coin will not have to hit my body before it hits the reel. This may simply be one of those things I need to see a "live" in-person teacher to help me with. It would be good if I could watch an experienced magician doing this so that I could SEE how he or she does it. Thanks again to all of you who have tried to help me with this. |

I don't see how the object can hit your body if the path is around your body. Seems your statement means you are just letting go, with no thought and expect the line and reel to take care of themselves, which I does not. If wearing on the left side, work on the left side of the body, not in the center or to the right. Again, I will mention that the object should not be released until it is close to the edge of the coat or pant pocket. If using the front pant pocket, the work is all done in front of the pocket so the object only has an inch or so to travel.
May I suggest you read all the above by the members several times until it sinks in. You seem to be dismissing what everyone is saying instead of thinking about it and actually try it. Maybe it would help if you were not so vague, as you only say the manufacturer, and do not name the product. Maybe that would let us target your suggestions more clearly. What is the product you are discussing? |
