So I was wondering what you all do to put yourselves in the right frame of mind to sit and practice each day. As well, I'm curious to know what kind of set up you use. (I currently steal two mirrors from the walls to try and find my angles.)

May I state something that may sound a bit harsh but it is not meant to be so read on. hee hee DO NOT USE MIRRORS to practice. Trust me on this. I used to do that and then realized how bad of a habit it had become. the reason is that everything in the mirror is the opposite of what the audience sees. The other PRIME reason is that you start to get used to and accustomed to seeing your reflection when you rehearse. As soon as you get in a real world situation, that reflection is not there anymore and you feel weird about it. It really starts to throw you off. The best advice I can give for rehearsing is to find a nice room where you can set up your table and your props and leave them up. Then set up a cam corder on a tripod stand at the other end. Have a TV near by so you can watch the video when you are done rehearsing. This way you can always go to the room, start the music, go through the routine, tape it and then watch it on the TV. This is best because the camera is showing you what the audience sees. You can check angles this way as well and you do not pick up bad habits from the mirrors. I tend to practice every other day mostly because of the eagerness I have to improve myself and to work on new routines. When it starts becoming dull for me, that is when I take a break, break out my act video tapes, watch magic and get juiced back up again. It usually does the trick. Hope this helps. Kyle

Putting on some new or even old music I have used in my programs for a while helps this Nearly Normal Guy.
Of course there is a difference between practice and rehearsal. Harris

Harris brings up a very good point. There is a difference between practice and rehearsal. In my book, practice is where you can do the same effect over and over again studying every little move till you get it feeling right.
In rehearsal, you do your entire act or routine from start to finish as if you were doing it for your audience. You do not stop and do it over again if you mess up. These are the main differences between the two as I see it. Kyle
