Suspension levitation... how hard is this? I am new to illusions, can this be done only on stage?

Theoretically, it’s not "hard". But I don't think it is practical nowadays, it might be something that looks "dated" when you perform it.
Yes, it can only be done on stage. Unless you are taping a TV special, then you can hire plants, therefore you can use as intimate a setting as the illusion can fit into. Otherwise, what I said above still goes, it can only be done on stage, and be sure there can't be anyone seeing you from the extreme sides. :)
I would, however contest that there is in REALITY very little pportunity to perform what could actually be termed "close-up" magic.

I have a walk-away suspension I have performed at schools with standard type stages. You have to work deep (upstage) and before the show I walked and sat in various spots to ensure all angles were covered.
This procedure included partially closing the curtains on each side, which blocked a bad angle but still gave audience a clear view of illusion. It worked out well and I got a lot of good feedback. Trying to do this other than the highly structured setting of a stage would be difficult. A living room for a birthday party would be really hard as your audience can jump up at any time and visit you "on stage". Basically these suspensions make great publicity shots and are more commonly used in these circumstances.

If you don't have Mark's video get it. It has a lot of different ways of doing a suspention levation. One of them that was very good was his version of the flying carpet which involved a large hinged piece of cardboard that look as an instuction book. This would be an easy way to present it at a party once you were done the book could velcro shut and eliminate any prying eyes.

It has its place. And it is a killer in that right place. But that is not in the flat, surrounded, or outdoors. You will really need both a curtain and a backdrop. Weight is a factor as is lighting. There is nothing in that price range that I think is as good or better. So, yes, Lucy and I have one too.
