For a number of years now I have been wanting to discuss the best practice on selling my show and act. The best steps to marketing and promoting my talent. Can you please tell me the best forum to start a discussion on the Business of Entertainment and what tools and tricks others are using to become booked on Cruise lines; Fairs and Festivals and Corporate gigs? What are you doing that is working for you?
Many thanks Richard |

Richard: This is a very broad question and so not one in which we can dive into and answer in full for you right here. Each one of these can warrant it's own discussion and many already have. I know that I have a huge thread all on festival and fair marketing and you can look that up as it might be of help to you.
The better question I think is what do you have to have as an entertainer to be successful as magic as a business or career? This could be discussed a little bit better and each will have their own ideas and concepts. Because before you can even work any market, there are fundamentals of what YOU have to have set up and what you have to do to be a success. At that top of this list (of many) are: 1) You have GOT to have a product or service that is top-notch, tested and proven. You have got to be able to have a product people want and want to have back again and again 2) you have GOT to have the ability to take massive amounts of action towards your own success. It is called Show Business for a reason. you have to have both to be successful. You will spend almost 90% of your time on the business and 10% on the show. The show is actually the break you get from the marketing. there are MANY more but I will end it here in hopes others can chime in on this. Kyle

Since target marketing will likely be a big part of such a discussion, this would be as good a place as any IF you intend to market a kid's show. There's a wealth of experience here.

Thank you Kyle, can you share your festival and fair link.
I guess I was hoping their would be an actual unique forum for discussing marketing tactics and strategy. What works for the reader and what has been used but was not effective. I know it is a wide subject and I was hoping for a space or place to discuss the complexities of the Business of Show business regarding attracting more bookings and Gigs, Hope that is making sense..... |

Yes, this area should be fine to discuss and help you out. Just be prepared to focus a bit as the question as a whole is very broad and could take many venues. I think it is important at first to know what YOU need to have in place and set up before any market is even brought up. There are many things anyone and everyone should do and have in place before going forward. Perhaps this is a good place as any to start.

Ok in priority what do you consider the five most important aspects set up and to have in place before promoting your act?
(Hopes to stimulate discussion) |

You are here, the business section of the board. I'm not sure of Starrpower's perception but there is a separate forum for kids parties and entertainers, much of what goes on here is general business including corporate, fairs and festival, schools, colleges, and other markets, consumer and professional. Yes, this info can also apply to the kids and family markets but I certainly wouldn't consider this forum a kids party forum or I myself wouldn't be here.
I receive about 30-35 messages from this section a week and only about 5-10% are from kids performers or about the kids markets. It would help if rather than just coming in and asking such general questions if you would introduce yourself, your ares of interest and type of performance(s), and a bit more about yourself and current level of experience. It then becomes, as Kyle said, much easier to assist you and properly address responses. Also learn to use the new and improved search function as there is a wealth of information in this forum going back 12 years. Welcome. |

Thank you MindPro great advice and top sic pointers.
I have been in the entertainment arena for many years and went from being a musician in a band to performing Hypnosis part time and now the last 10 years full time. I have polished my show to where I do believe it has the appeal but of course there is always room for improvement. I admire those performers (Magicians and others) who have created a unique persona "Gazza" I saw in Key West and was very impressed and I met "Carrot Top" as well. They have this certain drive and finesse that drives them forward. I love learning from others and believe if a system works then one can master it and follow it. The markets I target are fairs and festivals; Corporate and Cruise lines and I do not perform for younger audiences typically. I personally market and gain success these days mainly online without the need for printed material. I also attend trade shows and convention regularly. I do need help with a Business plan or Marketing plan, I don't have one yet and have never seen the need. I guess I use the trial and error techniques. I am pleased to be in the right place and thank you for the welcome; it is the business aspects that excite me the most. I see it as a challenge to book shows and increase my performances on previous years. I welcome all and any views |

My perception, Mindpro, was based on the fact that I was totally confused and thought I was still in the Children's section. I blame alcohol.
As for the 5 most important factors for a magic business, off the top of my head I'd like to look at: 1. Goals for your business 2. Personal interests/skills (Mentalist? Hypnotist? Illusionist? etc.) 3. Target market & their needs (what problem are you solving for them?) 4. How will you deliver your marketing message? 5. $$$ (What are you prepared to spend to get started: props, costuming, sound, advertising, etc.) |

I guess I am lost and confused. Not unusual mind you.
So to try to find and clear my head lets ask some questions. You have been performing for 10 years full time without marketing or promoting? What is it you are doing now? I mean it might help us if we knew what you are doing, so we don't tell you things you already know. You have a polished show. Ok. Great. What does that mean? Seriously. If we have no idea what it is you ARE doing, we can not really be in a position to help with what you might want to be doing. We could spend 10 pages telling you things you are already doing and frustrate you for no reason. It would be easier if we had more information to try to help.

Danny,
This is a discussion forum correct? I have mentioned numerous times I am wanting to stimulate discussion and not just merely gain advice or help. This would then help and stimulate anyone who chooses to read both now and in the future. My original post was about "Starting a discussion" and sharing with each other tips and strategies; it certainly is not all about me and what I need. Forums are surely a place for sharing and if this is the case let's share! Also I did not say I have never needed marketing or promoting but I do promote without the need for printed material. I have a Masters in Education and Evaluation and Business Diploma and part of my study and fascination if you like is the power of persuasion (After all I am a full time Hypnotist) For example one of the tactics I use is text message marketing. I am fairly new to this technology but I am having decent results since I attend NACA and APCA and typically the people I am marketing to are college kids. I have studied statistics on email marketing, when to send and how and the open rates are very low so I am varying my approach. Since everyone opens texts this seems logical to me to get that dialogue open it what is a crowded market place. What one tactic do you adopt that is unique and outside the box and gives you great results when marketing your act? Thanks |

Yes,I had posted my answers before realizing this too. By the nature of your initial question it appeared you were newer to the business or an amateur wanting to begin working professionally.
After ten tears in the business it does seem odd to be asking such basic and elementary questions, which is why I asked for more information about yourself and level of experience. Also if you've been a member here for over a year, as a hypnotist, it's odd we are not familiar with you in either forum. The problem about "stimulating discussion: is there is not need for it's as it's been discussed over and over again all you need is to use the search function to access this info. If you have that level of knowledge and experience you should be offering rather than asking. Man, hypnotists, whew! |

Stimulating hypothetical discussions about this is about as useful as hypothetical discussions about driving with no frame of reference.
I for one am out. Good luck. Also your communication skills seem to be lacking ironically enough.

How arrogant
I haven't posted much on this forum so far because I was told it was generally "Hostile" and people like yourself could appear quite "Rude" and I haven't been disappointed so far. It isn't hypothetical and of course you failed to read my last post. I want to learn new and fresh ideas and techniques used by others. I want to share with others and help and encourage too. The Business of Show Business is an awesome subject once we get into robust discussion and learning. I guess if you feel my communication skills are lacking my Professor at my University was also wrong but what do I know really. Thanks for the experience, clearly this forum isn't the place Sorry for those who have an interest discussing business, Good luck and keep those warm welcomes alive! |

So that whole bit about welcoming all views was just shinola huh?
As was said a simple use of a search function will bring up pages of the very discussion you seek. The only difference would be if you had a unique question. To try to stimulate discussion in broad terms is not useful as there is so much bandwidth already dedicated to such things. Sorry pointing out basics is rude. As for your professor I never said he was wrong. I was saying you did not communicate well here.

A little off topic, I have to say any rudeness/friction is good for filtering out people who can't handle rejection. If you can't handle even a little bit on a forum from faceless posters (who are helping free of charge) then how can you handle it going out and generating your own business? Danny isn't all that scary, he makes a good point, it plenty of times comes off as cynical.
That being said, most discussion gets stimulated from asking specific questions. The general ones you asked are indeed in other threads. The good threads that start are the ones relating to concrete topics. If you know of a specific topic then do ask it. A lot of free advice will be given, and it's up to each of us to implement it. |

I'm now officially offended.
Perhaps you were told WRONG and maybe you should pay closer attention to who you accept such advice or warnings from. Are they a regular member here? I'm guessing not or they would have offered you better, more realistic advice. This is actually one of the most helpful forums on the Magic Café. For example this is a very similar post that just started a day or two ago and there was nothing but a warm reception and helpful information and advice. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......um=44&12 Then again he got off on the right foot representing himself correctly, rather than something closer to misrepresenting themselves or even perhas a troll. The only time anything even resembling harshness happens around here is when members here feel they are being duped, misled or played. Then we'll be the first to call a spade a spade. There are plenty of great business topics and posts here, there's not need to stimulate hypothetical discussions. If anything I must say to me it's "rude" to barge into an established community as a newbie as ask longtime members and professionals for what works best for them. Many people put years of hard work to figure out these answers and it's pretty arrogant to expect everyone just to offer them up on a silver platter for you just for the asking. Then again, if you've been lurking here for some time and are such an acclaimed college boy, you should know that. Especially for a hypnotist that specializes in human behaviors and suggestibility I suggest taking a step back, perhaps a "take 2", or as you suggested maybe this isn't the place for you. Too bad, you obviously have a lot to learn about presenting yourself. Best of luck. |

Your comment, "I for one am out" reminds me of Shark Tank and had me laughing out loud. Gerry |
