I remember once being at an old restaurant in the 1980s in Bismarck ND. Performing the sympathetic cards. A table of about 8 people kept looking at one person at the table over and over again. Turns out that person was Peter Pit. I have no idea what he was doing in Bismarck. At the end, he came up to me privately and said, " I could give you some tips on that slight". He was quite nice about it. The audience had to look at him to decide if the routine was funny, magical or garbage. He handled himself just fine.. My pet peeve is magicians who think that a technique needs to be better when the routine is already working based on the timing. The issue is that that often do it in front of the audience...

You're watching a magic instructional DVD. They bring-in a layman (often pretty woman) and demo the trick. Without interruption, Magi goes into "explanation" phase when it appears the layman is a layman.
I can't handle the guilt.
Guilty even at EMC 2012 Session 7 (rings). EMC even!
It's not their senses that mislead, it's their assumptions.

My biggest pet peeve is dead time, and not making an effect clear. Clearly a kicker ending should be a logical surprise , but effects should be easy to follow. And I often find myself agreeing more and more with a point Alex Elmsley makes at the start of the Elmsleys collection volume 1 and that was that sometimes you SHOULD tell the audience what you intend to do before you do it. Logic being, why should an audience watch me set up for an ace assembly unless I tell them something amazing is going to happen?

Why should an audience watch someone deal a deck of cards into two piles for a minute or so unless you have some interesting patter or something to say while they are doing it? I think it sort of applies to general magic more than card magic but the point still stands

The Professor noted that confusion is not magic. Neither is "dead time."

I don't understand your point. Of course dead time isn't magic. There's a difference between proper pacing, and dead time. Proper timing meaning pausing a beat or two between magical effects, dead time being dealing 4 sets of 3 cards without having an interesting line or thought to ponder whole doing it. The whole adage that 4 seconds isn't long, but stand on stage for 4 seconds and do nothing and you'll notice how long it is comes to mind.

The only time nothing should be visibly happening, something should be happening in the minds of the spectators. A dramatic pause of "1 & 2 and 3 & show" does it.

That's another pet peeve, people not having a proper understanding of timing

Title sequences on DVDs and videos. Two minute trick with three minute titles. Tricks are not movies!

My favorite magical pet peeves are, in no particular order:
1) The obligatory "...ordinary deck of cards..."
2) The old saying- "...everythings fair so far..." or its cousin "... fair enough.." pretty much any patter with anything being declared "fair". Crucify me- so what, I don't care, but Bill Malone drives me crazy with it.
3) Magic patter and presentation that rattles off at lightning speed making it impossible to fallow what is suposed to be happening. Again, Bill Malone and Harry Lorayne both do it and it seems like theyre so bored and eager to get it over with.
4) Smart *** patter and one liner jabs = Bill Malone
5) Any effect with a blank deck or any blank cards. Why let the audience in on the idea of any kind of gaffed cards? No wonder magicians say "...this is an ordinary deck of cards..." Oh yeah? Ordinary as opposed to what?
6) Card to 3 inch thick wallet..
If you want to see the real work, look up Frank Garcia on youtube.

When a magician is condescending towards other magicians while performing a routine. It usually starts off like "You see when other magicians do it they have to....I don't". As if they are much better then all other magicians.

Downloads that are so angle sensitive that they are completely impractical! This should be disclosed so the buyer knows what they are getting.

DVDs where slights and tricks are broken down into small pieces that are then separated by.... You guessed it, long repetitive titles!

Well, let's see:
- Rewording equivoque does not mean you've invented a new effect
- Bicycle cards with the "FREE APP" sticker on the box
- Being introduced to new people by my friends as 'a magician.'
- The description of a new effect which consists of quotes from other magicians. We can all show an effect we've created to a friend and have them praise it to no end.
- Magicians who are name droppers ("oh, I was just chatting to Roy Walton and Bebel the other day when...")
- Those who hate on cardistry and flourishing for no reason. It isn't my sort of thing either but people who flourish do not call it magic or call themselves magicians at all. They class it as a separate art form and if it makes them happy, just let them do it!
- When you can't get a certain principle to work for whatever reason at the start of a magic book, and the next 18 effects all use that principle.
- Misdirection that involves flinging your arms around.
I think that's all for now...

But...that is the point. Magicians who haven't realized that dead time is counterproductive and is not magic. A legitimate pet peeve.

Magic acts that don't do any magic for the first five to eight minutes. Can you imagine a singer coming on stage and talking for 8 minutes before they sang their first song.

Magicians who come up to you after a performance to tell you "how THEY would do it", or ask you to reveal how certain original effects of yours were accomplished.

Magicians and (people) who think they're better than everyone else.

Super Bowl XXVII, Michael Jackson stood relatively motionless for the first nearly 2 minutes of a 12.5 minute half time show... didn't really detract.

It depends on the person. Some people can pull it off. I think what is annoying is those who can't but try anyway.
Reality is a real killjoy.

Those who write long, long posts that are wordy as hell and take a long time to read and basically talk about themselves and how great they are as opposed to everybody else and make a point, a point, a really not very interesting point that could easily have been said in one sentence but instead they write a post, a post a really really long post that ends just going around in circles, circles, around in circles.
