Hey guys. Just wondering if anyone could help with some info?
After a conversation, and really only out of curiosity, I was wondering how many units are sold of an average packet trick on release? Someone just asked me, and I honestly have no idea at all! Magic ain't a massive scene here in the uk, and I imagine it's bigger in the u.s. So, how many units of an successful packet trick release would you expect to sell? I realise it's not a simple thing to answer, but I don't know wether is 100,1000,5000?? Something like color monte maybe? Thanks, and if no one wants to share that info, no problem at all. I'm just curious. Kneill. |

Color monte is probably the most popular packet trick ever created. it has sold a lot of copies.

Probably not as many as you might think if you were just thinking of supplying it yourself. Color Monte reached its amazing sales numbers over decades but was also supplied as giveaways for trade shows etc. Big sellers were always in the minority. I had a couple of early packet effects which sold less than 100 copies and didn't cover their production and advertising costs. Do you know dealers that might stock it if you produce it? Is there a dealer that may be interested in actually producing it and paying you for the rights to it?
Have you costed out the printing for 100 or 500? What you might have to price it at if you were going to supply it to a magical wholesaler. One of my favorite packet effects "Monster Mash" I only produced 250 of. Later I sold the manufacturing rights to someone else but they still haven't produced it, they must figure the market isn't there for it. I'd say a really good packet effect that captures peoples imagination and is well advertised can sell thousands. But for every magic trick winner there are hundreds of losers. Even a good trick sometimes doesn't sell well. Is the packet effect totally original? A variation of a variation? Easy reset? Heavy on sleights/easy to do? Funny presentation? These are all things that might affect how something sells. If you produced a 100 and it sold well and there was demand for it you could always do a bigger reprint later. |

Monster Mash. Sounds like something I'd buy.
Anyone have an original copy that they want to get rid of?

That is great info Paul thank you. I haven't any thoughts about releasing anything, it was purely out of curiosity. I did release two packet tricks years ago thru a dealer with excellent distribution, and they did ok, so just wondered how much magic has grown since then really.
Thank you though, that was very helpful for anyone interested. Kneill. |

Continuing the thread, out of curiosity, what are the best sellers? Magic dealers, please weigh in. At my local magic shop, I've noticed in the counter display: Twisted Sisters, color monte, NFW, Skinners monte, some Nick Trost trick I can't remember the name of, etc usually placed alongside the gaffed decks! I wonder how modern web based dealers like theory 11 have changed the game, with massive databases, weekly 'hot' releases, huge advertising budgets etc?
I realise people have strong but mixed feelings about them, but I gotta admit, when it comes to distribution of new products, they're way ahead of the competition. K |

I think NFW is great, been using it since I got into magic, lots of magic with those cards, & I love using color monte also but my 1st pick would be NFW

Surprised that Phil Goldstein's "B'Wave" has been left out...
At my local magic shop, it seems the common ones have already been mentioned but that one. So my votes are for B'Wave, Color Monte, Twisted Sisters, Skinner's Monte, & NFW. (However, ACE has kind of taken over NFW)
