Are there any tricks that involve a "mess up" as part of the trick (dropped cards, coins etc...)?

There's a whole slew of "magician in trouble" type effects. I find myself avoiding this type of thing because it's hard to make it appear genuine, and because when you bring the effect to a successful conclusion, you appear smug to your audience.
Of course, I definitely try to take covert advantage of fumbles, but I don't typically routine them in. |

A lot of children magicians do stuff like this because kids get a kick out of it when their heroes, people who can actually do magic, screw up.
Mentalists sometimes miss things on purpose, often to call back to them and get them right later--sometimes it makes them seem more credible. Dr. JK is right though, it takes some acting chops to pull off stuff like this. |

Dropping a coin is the right occasion to make it disappear as you take it back from the floor. Dropping things is also used to ditch gimmicks. Also used in stage magic, with tricks where you stab a card with a sword. It goes somehting like "At the count of three, you'll throw the cards. One! Two! Three! Just then will you throw them." Of course, the spectator has just thrown all the cards, and you haven't even tried to stab anything...
