From The Radio Times: "Derren Brown has a wager for art expert Ivan Massow. He bets a pound he can steal a particular Chapman Brothers painting from Massow’s gallery at a given day and time from under the noses of his security staff. And he gives Massow a photo of the man who will steal it. It’s a great set-up and Brown’s latest caper has a satisfying Oceans 11 feel. But with a twist: Brown’s accomplices are four pensioners, whom he has a month to train for their new role as art thieves. (Brown says his aim is to show us that older people are often invisible but have rich stories to tell – a fair point, but it starts to feel a bit patronising after a while.) There are enjoyable sequences as the gang test their nerve by painting graffiti on a wall and stealing watches from strangers’ wrists (or trying to). But the real drama comes on the day of the heist itself, when events start to unwind in unexpected ways. It’s fun trying to spot the twists coming." I suspect the month's training of the pensioners is actually the fauxess, but it should be fun. |

You guys in the UK get all the cool Magic shows. I never see anything like this here in that states unless it's a random performance on America's Got Talent or something. It is a shame that Penn and Teller Fool Us got cancelled though. That was a lot of fun to watch.

I really wish Derren would go back to reading minds. He was good at that. I have been losing interest though as he moves more to the self styled guru.

It was a good watch. No doubt inspired by the reputed antics of Erik Jan Hanussen. I enjoyed it. Brilliantly shot, well scripted, and left the viewer with a little food for thought.
Nothing amazing, but well worth viewing, IMO.

Yeah, buy a few beers and it might look entertaining. Total rubbish.

Well, I've tended not to pay much attention to Derren in recent years but this passed a very entertaining 90 minutes and I know it MUST have been entertaining as my wife watched it all the way through and laughed a few times. A rare event with Derren or indeed anything magic related.

I agree with cicusman, not very good at all. I much prefer his stage shows and theatre type shows, they are wonderful, but this just left me cringing.

I thought it was entertaining enough. My mrs liked it too. Not exactly realistic in so much as you don't leave £100k pictures on a wall in a way they can be lifted off, if for mo other reason than health and safety. 2 screws and they'd have been thwarted. Still liked it though

I hate to admit it, as I think Derren Brown has been the major light of our interest in the UK, but the program itself was not the 'punchy' material we are used to.
The reasonably clever denouement was slightly lost in the clumsiness of the other performances. Mentioned with a 'heavy heart'. :( |

You also don't have the Hypnotism Act of 1952 getting in your way and you can do things with fireworks that we banned decades ago.

It's funny, reading elsewhere on lay-forums last night's show was received better by lay-people than some of his recent stuff, by was a bit to basic for us it would seem.
We know all about misdirection and so there was nothing new in this show that we didn't already know, but lay-people would find that explanation into the subject, interesting. A good bit of entertainment and better than most of last night's TV.

What I've come to enjoy with Derren (beyond his top notch showmanship) has been his 'winks' at the magicians and mentalists watching his shows. For instance, there have been several moments where he *blatantly* puts on like he's using ______ gimmick and then reveals a pre-printed prediction or whatever..... and then he'll briefly look into the camera and grin. That touch of snark makes him fun to watch, for me.
But this special didn't really have any of that. It's a well-written, well-executed television show that Derren crafts around a principle of misdirection but this one wasn't even a little bit directed at us. I guess we'll just have to wait for Infamous to get "wow'd" again. |
