I practice hours on end.. Sleights, shuffles, card handling, and what not.. My double lift is perfect in my eyes (push off double lift).. I know a few tricks and practice them.. But what do you guys think are some of the better tricks to have in our "book of tricks?" I don't necessarily mean by skill.. but by impact of the audience. Rather it's self working, sleight of hand based or no matter what.. Can some of you please tell me some of the better tricks to be practicing? I'd prefer 5 or so standing up and 5 or so on a card table. This is all opinionated of course. But for the next week or so, I wanna focus on a few tricks and getting 10 or so down to a science with my own patter and routine adjustments. I don't want too many that you must setup a deck with. I prefer being able to borrow a deck, but a couple which need setting up is fine.
So far on that list I have.. (Tell me if you think any of them shouldn't be there.. but I doubt it) Ambitious card routine.. (so many people do it though, I'm having a tough time making it "my own" Triumph.. I'm probably going to work on Dai Vernon's method soon though.. Quite a smart way of doing it. If you haven't checked that out, you should. Here and there (Hand Sandwich) Don't really care for the setting up part, but it leaves a really good impression.. I often get people saying "But I JUST saw that card in your hands.. there's NO way" People don't really think about the obvious as much as I suspected originally.. And that's what's on my list for the most part. I'm going to try and go do some street magic in a week or two and I definitely need to build my routines and get a few things down to a science. Thanks for any replies that I get. If you're reading it, please don't be afraid to make even the silliest of recommendations. I get kinda sad when I see 20 views and only 1 reply. |

I would recommend the classic card tricks. In the 90's Michael Ammar did an amazing job of sifting through 1000's of old and contemperary card effects to find only the BEST ones, and made the video series Easy to Master Card Miracles. These tricks stand the test of time and kick so much butt, most "new" tricks try to say they are improvements or variations on these originals... but 99% of the time they aren't. Because the originals are so awesome to begin with. Some of these classics are:
1. The Ambitious Card. Any Deck, any time. pure SOH. master your DL, and you can impress anywhere any time 2. Triumph. The original. 3. Out Of This World 4. Las Vegas Leaper. (Cards Across) 5. Twisting the Aces 6. Dr Daley's Last Card Trick 7 . Card Warp. 9. Torn and Restored Card 10. Card to Wallet (or impossible location) The most important thing I want to draw your attention to is the diversity in plots this list has, and also diversity in performing venues (ACR for walkaround, Triumph is tabled, Las Vegas Leaper can play big enough for platform/stage) If I could add a few more itd be Color Monte and Michael Skinner's Ultimate 3 card Monte, and of course... invisible deck if you want to include effects outside of a standard deck... |

I would also add to the list some sort of Three Card Monte, which in my opinion it is best to develop your own variation.
Also, I would add some sort of Poker Test, which John Bannon has a lot of--it's something that cards are so heavily associated with that I think it would be a shame to ignore it. Also a good ACAAN is a must for any card magician IMHO. |

Just go to my magic website - 3rd site listed under this post - and click on anything and every thing you might be interested in. I'd suggest LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Vol.1, but that's just about out of print. But there many others.

I've still got a lot of reading and video watching to do with all of this stuff. I can't really sit there 12 hours a day reading; I spend 3-4 hours a day reading and the rest practicing; I'm really anxious to get all of Card College. I wish I could buy all of the stuff, I prefer hard copies over PDF any day... |

There's quite a few gems in Ammar's videos. When you do get the chance, Lorayne has some great material as well. His gambler vs magician is quite a showstopper.

As a general recommendation for fun card plots and just about everything else David Williamson's lecture on Penguin Magic is awesome value - and has a beautiful T&R and colour changing cards routine on it - amongst others. His thinking is a lesson in itself.

There's soooo many card effects! Trying to boil them down to just ten is impossible. You've already had loads of cool suggestions. All I can do, especially as a beginner, is offer some card effects that when I see them I think - wow, that's great! Here's 18 that I would be very happy to have mastered (various styles, some self-working, some gaffes, some pure sleight of hand - can be presented as skill, magic or mentalism) - they could probably last me the rest of my life if I could do them perfectly:
Red Hot Mama/ Chicago Opener (or the expanded Chicago Surprise) Take Me to Your Leader Untouched ACR Cardwarp ACAAN Knocked Subconscious Dr Daley's Last Trick OOTW Sam the Bellhop NFW Ultimate 3 card Monte Triumph Double Thought Card Projection Cutting to the Aces Signed card to wallet (or impossible location) Lazy Man's Card Trick Invisible Deck |

I think some of it depends on your personality and your particular set. I've seen some (what I consider mediocre tricks) done in such a way that they seem really magical. Years ago, I spent time trying to really learn tricks and found that I was just trying to amaze myself. I then thought about my audience (children) and focused on what effects they would actually enjoy. I think we're both much happier with my decision to focus on what the audience will enjoy. Also, it's pretty hard to come up with a 10 best list. Think about a 10 best list in any genre (music, art, movies, etc.) and see how many people differ in their opinions on what items were left out (or put in).

Learn to do a classic pass. It will take you a LONG time to perfect it. But when you do, you'll find that you can do a whole lot of routines by bringing the selected card to the top of the deck.
You'll need to learn a way to get the card to the top while you are working on your classic pass, I do a bluff pass that can be found in Card Finesse 2 by Jon Rachenbauer. Just enjoy the process while you are practing.
Self concept is destiny..

Bought effects:
(I have no business association with any links) Los Angeles Open by Gordon Bean parlour routine, one to one A truly fantastic table prediction effect, I use this all the time. It comes within the Joker Joker package. The whole performance, routine, and handling is so clean. Can be performed surrounded. No sleights. The spectator(s) just cannot get their head around this puzzling effect. There is no way they have missed anything. Yet the prediction is in sight the whole time. IMO I repeat this effect. see it here: starts at 2:08 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PafidYy52cQ Premonition by Eddie Joseph stage routine, one-to-one This has been in my arsenal for many years. One of the best purchases I ever made. No force of any kind. Any card is named. No special cards. The spectator finds there are only 51 cards in the deck. The card they chose is the only one missing. Nothing added, nothing taken away. The performer does not touch the deck. The reactions I get with this one are incredible. http://www.trickshop.com/eddie-joseph-premonition.html Hunter's Monte parlour routine, one-to-one A fantastic 3 card monte routine. Brought to my attention by the great DVD "The Art of Card Splitting" by Magic Makers Inc. This DVD includes 10 famous packet tricks explained. Plus how to create them. Some nice routines here. see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAKOcmPwGNs sleight of hand: one of my personal favourites would have to be the "Card From Pocket" routine. As a performer, it uses every sleight you can think of. Misdirection, counts, d/lifts, glide, passes, cuts, shuffles ... etc I have performed the same routine under so many pseudonym's, and using so many different sleights, and I keep on doing so. It's a case of the "same horse ... different jockey". But no-one ever realises. For example, I never said "card from MY pocket did I?" In essence ... in my opinion, sleights are the way to go best resources: books/dvd royal road to card magic the encyclopedia of card magic expert at the card table wulfiesmith |
