I have a giant 3 card Monte stage version. Do you think kid's would like this type of effect ?
Thanks D. |

Well if it's the version I have (with sliding parts)I wouldn't as it's obvious how it works and they'll let you know that. Other versions you could probably make work with a good routine but I think there are better jumbo card tricks for kids out there. If you're thinking of doing monte for kids the best version I've seen is Gary Dunn's water monte on his DVD I can't see a card version being more entertaining than that one.

Of course it could work. All you need is a fun routine that all the children will enjoy. Remember, the fun is the ride you take them on. Even if some know how it works, if you present it in a fun, interactive and comedic way, I'm pretty sure the children will enjoy it.

You can say that for any effect though, Danny (and it has been said for about every effect on this forum whenever anyone asks about any particular routine). Can we just assume that everyone knows routines should be fun, interactive and entertaining and move on?

I'm not familiar with the larger Monte routine you're referencing here, but I would still categorize any traditional Monte routine as being a sucker trick since you ultimately fool the spectators into picking the wrong card. And since you should always limit the number of sucker tricks you use in any show, this is a valid question you pose Dave because I feel that there are far too many much better options out there for sucker routines when it comes to kids.
For example, I would tend to believe that kids will get much more excited watching something like Peek-A-Boo Bunny over playing cards. Just my humble opinion, but then again, you have to be the final judge on this. Especially if you feel you have come up with a terrific kids routine for this effect. Now the simplicity and perceived skill involved in most Monte routines might make it a much more ideal choice for an adult show or for kids over the age of 8. - Gary |

Nope, that's not an assumption or a cliché, it's specific opinion about a particular version of that effect from someone who knows that effect and knows children. The slidy version of 3 card monte wouldn't fool anyone of any age unless perhaps you were performing it 30 foot away from them. My assumption was that he isn't playing stadiums, much. I think that's a fairly safe assumption.

Of course children love this 'type' of effect. The Water Monte being an effect of this 'type'.
I haven't been a professional for long, but my acid paper test is, if I enjoy an effect then I'll use it. It tends to work. I call it the Tommy Cooper test. He was only funny to the audience because he was having fun. |

I saw magician perform this very close to the audience at a birthday party. It went over remarkably well. Kids and adults loved it. And even though I knew the working, I couldn't really notice any hints. And more importantly, I couldn't hear the slides. Perhaps the key is spending the money on a good version of the trick. I bought a cheap version, and it went right in the trash for all the reasons magicgeorge said.

Gary, your point on it being a sucker trick with much better options, is just what I was worried about. I do have Peek-a-Boo Bunny from Silly Billy aka David Kaye, and I do not consider it a sucker effect as I tell the kids he may try to run. But I have a jumbo fraidy cat, which is made with dragons instead of a rabbit. and I think one is enough.
The other issue I have with the Monte is there is no fun ending to it. |

Good to know there's a decent version of the slide one available.
Think I paid £20 for mine which I assumed would be enough for a decent version. So there's another bad assumption of mine. |

If you want a large monte, check out Harry Anderson's three card prince. Its a great routine, works great with older kids. No sliding parts

Just to get this clear (for me) are we talking about, say, two black Jacks and a red Queen? Do 5-year olds understand playing card values and colours? If my understanding is correct, perhaps it would play better for kids with say, two duck birds and a rabbit. Imo, that would be a lot more fun. Remember the illusion where you turn the card by 90 degrees? See above sketch. This could be "Find the Rabbit" monte I think I will develop this further. But back to the slider... thinking along further lines you could have a three cards, each with a slider that showed either RED spots or BLUE spots. I think the 3-card Monte effect would then play much better for kids (and adults). John |

Spellbinder and Qua-Fiki have a good version of a giant monte on magicnook.com. No moving parts in the props.
