God bless him. I believe each of us has our limit to life and when we get there, we know it.
My now gone mother who lived to be 89 used to tell me "Old age isn't for sissies." He obviously had enough of life and decided to end it. I'd probably do it a little less spectacularly and quietly with a plastic bag and a bottle or injection of something. But he did it his way. He obviously wished his money to go to charity. Finished and done.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

As far as giving to charities is concerned, I always felt that if I had enough money, I'd set up a fund to help aging musicians. There are so many incredible musicians who suffer greatly when they can no longer play to make a living. Right now the great Tony Rice is suffering, unable to play and dependent on the charity of others to survive. Levon Helm was forced to put on monthly concerts in his home in order to keep his house after cancer treatment drained his finances. And the countless jazz and blues musicians who today languish in old age homes, forgotten and broke. Being able to provide funds to make these artists final years livable has always been a dream of mine.

Does anyone ever ask how much these charities have in the bank ? You know, the money that you give them that never goes to where it's supposed to go ?
Believe me, it's a LOT. Here in the U.K. a charity is not allowed to form unless it intends to build it's money in the bank to be 'viable' . Only the smallest fraction goes to where you think it's going. RIP-OFF ! |

There are MANY good charities where the money goes where it is supposed to. It's wrong, I think, to paint all of them with the same brush.

Like it or lump it - what I have said is the truth, and it cannot be denied. There are many people here who do a great deal of good, but are denied charitable status by the Charities Commission - simply because they refuse to let the money build up in the bank instead of it going direct to it's intended purpose. So you see, I am NOT painting them all with the same brush as you put it. Bobby. |

I don't think I would, unless, as a poster near the beginning of the thread pointed out, I had ANOTHER 40M stashed away.
I had a pipe dream, that if I had so much money that my accountant suggested a foundation as a tax shelter, rather than come up with the "Ed Rhodes Foundation to help people," I would rather develop "The Wayne Foundation." Mind you, to do that, I'd have to get permission from Warner Communication and DC Comics and they might not be willing to allow Bruce Wayne's idea out into the real world where it could be corrupted and mis-run. But, after reading "Batman" for over 40 years, I'd kinda like the idea of there really being a "Wayne Foundation."

Does anyone ever ask how much these charities have in the bank ? You know, the money that you give them that ]never goes to where it's supposed to go? Now some simple questions- 1. Who are "these charities?" 2. What is your source for your assertion that the money "you give them never goes to where it's supposed to go?" Or is it possible that you meant to say that there are SOME CHARITIES that aren't exactly above board and that money given to them doesn't always go to where it's supposed to? If you had said that, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Instead, you picked up the broad brush. Now, finally, show me exactly where I have misquoted you or taken you out of context. |

If I won a jackpot in a lottery I would certainly give it all to charity. I would not consider it earned money I would be entitled to keep.

I'd keep some, give some to family, give the rest away. What proportion? Maybe 20%, 20 %, 60%.

Ok, if you don't have the intelligence to read and understand properly what I have said, then there is no point continuing, as it is not my intention to derail this thread through some stupid comments of yours. I have said the facts as they are - and nothing can change what the Charity Commission rules are, at present, and how they affect the ability of those who give to know exactly where their money has gone. But here's another thought for you : Of the money that has been ploughed into Africa (to name one) over many years, why do many of their problems still exist ? (apart from droughts etc). Could it be, I wonder, down to the fact that whilst we pour money into them, their own governments use their cash to buy arms - thus we are helping feed wars and terrorism ? Is it not also true that they breed like rabbits - even although they can't even afford to feed themselves - because the catholic church teaches them to procreate, knowing that many of these children will die of malnutrition ? FACT ! I have lived there and seen what goes on. Can't also forget the millions, still being given to India - a country that has it's own space program. |
