Hey it's me again...
I have been working on a busking routine (I still think the trick is more linked to coin magic hence why I posted it in this section), where I first produce a can of coke out of my shoe, pour it into a glass and consume the contents throughout the show. When emptied, I want to perform a coins in glass effect and then vanish the glass (covered in newspaper and put between the spectators hands, then smashed). But I can't find any decent coin in glass effects (most of them are single coin penetrations or PK variations and don't look very angle friendly). Help? Thanks Hugh |

Check out David Roth's Penguin lecture. He spend a lot of time on coins across including some interesting stuff with a glass. He shows you how to do his routines with or without an expanded [.

What is superb in David Roth coin magic is the fact that his approach to the classic effects are chiseled and do not leave space for any form of confusion. David Neighbor's approach is also quite interesting.
Now, technically, neither David did spend as much time on the hand handling the glass as they did on the rest of the routine made famous by Edward Victor. The right hand remains arched over the mouth of the glass, which in my eyes always kept a flaw in this routine. Fortunately, R Paul Wilson popularized a handling doing away with this weakness. Also, when not restricted by angles, the young Maroccan magician Mehdi Elamri came up with a very smart move doing also away with this drawback. It differs from the jerking moves from back clip that is also interesting. It also differs from my own tossing from behind the back and arriving as the glass is held in front of the performer with his right hand holding the glass with the right palm facing the audience (as seen in Alex Conradi's award winning routine). There are also some smart finale for the last coin. One of them consists in placing the glass in the right pocket and the coin is heard to arrive there (and shown to have done so). Another one is to pass the coin through the bottom of the glass. Now Fred Kaps had a very nice stage or parlour approach to the effect (in Lewis Gansons's Routined Manipulations if my memory serves well) using the Downs Palm very efficiently. John Carney also has a very intelligent (as usual) approach to the effect using a champagne glass with very innovative ideas. All of these sources supply enough variety for any of us, with due consideration to his own performing conditions (close up, business venue, parlour, trade show, stage..), to design his own routine.

I'm mainly a card guy but have dabbled in coins more and more as of late. I currently perform Roths 3 coins across with shell. What type of skill level would be required for the stuff in his penguin lecture?

What concerns some of us and me in particular, however, with this justification is the verbal repetition with the other coins. This is what got me interested in the work of some of our peers who did search on the "receiving side". Now in the ones of your (excellent, IMHO) routines that I know, there is no technical reason preventing a performer to include in his routining technical variations on the receiving side.
