Pretend you've arrived at an out of town show...and your precious props aren't with you. No Multi-Di**nsional. No MOABT. No MindBus*er. Nada. I think most of us could manage as long as we could get to an office supply store. But with this DVD collection, you'll learn some of Richard Osterlind's solutions to all of the above without using anything high-tech. This is a DVD set with a pile of usable routines that have been tested in the real world by Osterlind.

You won't run across many mentalists who haven't been influenced by Osterlind in one way or another. His thinking, props and L&L DVDs have been teaching performers for 45 years. That's the inspiration behind his newest 2 DVD set: "The Sapphire Collection." There are 15 effects presented in the four hours...all original to Osterlind. Some use his specialized props. Many use props you already have -- or can acquire for a couple of dollars.

If you purchased Six Shooter, you're familiar with some of the material. Or if you're one of the many that picked up Numeric Vortex, Transparent Forces, a Dynamo Deck or a Whispering Die Box -- you're familiar with the basic workings of these props. What's new? On these DVDs you can see them presented to a live audience and then go backstage with Osterlind and Jim Sisti to learn the inner workings...and many of the nuances behind those presentations. "Nuance" is a very important component of presentation. If you're a visual learner like me, SEEING these props and routines is also seriously useful.

Each DVD concludes with a discussion on mentalism -- which is easily one of the highlights of this set. Osterlind's controversial and he's passionate...but there's no discounting who he is and what he's accomplished. I am always challenged by what he says.

So if you've ever wondered what Osterlind would do with an imp pad...or how he uses his own creations -- these DVDs are a wonderful resource. If you're interested in what gears turn in his mind when he's designing a routine this is the one. All of the effects are audience tested, well designed and many are very simple to execute.

It's obviously a matter of personal preference...but from where I'm sitting, there are three gems in this collection: the Vinyl Folder Q and A is brilliant way to do this mentalism classic with items purchased in a stationary store. I've been using Osterlind's ThoughtScan or Banachek's Psychic Folio -- but this concept could be done in a pinch and I am delighted with the simplicity of it. (And here I was thinking I was the only one who used doub*e sided t*pe to hold those bill*ts in place. Smile )

I loved the pendulum routine (and not just because he was using one of Sheree's creations) because, as with many of Osterlind's creations, this was simple to execute -- and can draw off the charts reactions from audience members. Pendulums are a big part of what I perform and I see many ways that the material Osterlind presents (or material using m**ked tarot or playing cards) would play very well.

One of the highlights for me was also the Poor Man's Book Test...which will literally cost you about a penny to perform...and can be used with any book. I first read this in Six Shooter...but the clarification on this DVD made a good concept crystal clear.

I also like the way this DVD looks. I like the camera angles...the editing. It has a wonderfully creative hand-made feel to it. Does that make sense?

If you're an Osterlind fan..."The Sapphire Collection" is a must-buy.

I agree that the discussion on mentalism is really worth its weight in gold. Of course, the main content (routines) are exemplary demonstrations of mentalism, and I think purchasers will be very happy with what's on The Saphire Collection.

Richard Osterlind DVDs are one of the rare items I buy as a pre-order because I know, sight unseen, that they will be top quality.

When it comes to card effects, I prefer those where the performer doesn't touch the deck. The effect "Hands Off" on this DVD fits that description and is very strong.

I also liked "Osterlind Read" where he gets one spectator to do a reading on another.

In the "Thoughts on Mentalism" sections, he touches on some of the eternal debates that rage in "Penny For Your Thoughts" on a regular basis. I can't say I agree with everything he says but he's clearly sincere and his opinions are certainly worthy of respect.

And I must consider Jim Sisti to be a pretty good mind reader too- during the explanation segments he has the uncanny knack of asking each question that comes to my mind!

The DVD is under my Christmas tree and I cannot wait to get at it.

I agree with almost everything Richard says about mentalism, particularly about disclaimers, readers, and that it's your job as a mentalist to look real.

Thank you Richard and Jim, the Dynamic Duo Of Mentalism!

I agree. It is an excellent collection. Actually the "Check Effect" is a super variation on one of Bryn's own routines.

The man has 45 years experience, he knows what he is talking about, and it shines through in this collection.

"Hands off", "Osterlind Read", "Mind Reading with Cards" and "Vinyl Folder Q & A" would make up the quartet of effects on this collection that I enjoyed, and will use the most. That said though, every one of the effects and the post chat with Jim Sisti on this DVD are worth the asking price, and a whole lot more!

Had a sneak peek of the DVD before wrapping it up and putting it under the tree. I just looked at one effect, hands off. It was brilliant. The effect is extremely strong and it is very workable, thanks for putting this out Richard, everything about the DVD is high quality.

Can't wait to get stuck into this over the Christmas holidays.

Thank you, seamagu! Hands Off is so much FUN to do. When I was performing it at lectures and conventions, before the release of the DVDs, I had a ball just looking at the faces of the audience!

It was with great expectations I looked forward to the launch of The Sapphire Collection.
Richard established his own standard with his first series, Mind Mysteries, and many have said that it would take a lot to beat this.

However, all he has released since, had its own great and unique character.

So it is also with The Sapphire Collection
There is material for both stage and close up, and everyone will find much they will use for their real audiences.

I was really interested in how he would perform effects like Hands Off, Perfected Add a Number and Almost Real Prediction described in Six Shooter - and I was not disappointed.

But there's more here!
OsterLind Read, Mind Reading with Cards and Vinyl Folder Q & A's effects I will tap into my heart!
Others will find their their favorites.

If you have not ordered it, do it now - you will not regret it!

I personally feel that just about every Mentalist will find quite a few things they like with this set, but that's likely old news by now. I love the takes on the existing effects, I have personally killed with "Hands-off" a few times, but I'm very intrigued to try out the updated version.

But also, I stress that the non-effect material that Richard includes is equally important. My 2 cents.

Is this exclusive, meaning only being released through Richard and Penguin? Or are other shops getting this as well?

Why buy from a dealer/shop when you can buy it direct from the source?

This would be ideal (if the direct source is reputable. Never heard anything bad about Osterlind, but stories about Jermay and Hank Lee could give me pause in general). Also, sometimes I have giftcards that can only be used through sites like Amazon. Seeing as the holidays just passed, Amazon giftcards/prepaid Visa giftcards are what I have.
