I see magicians like Paul Harris,Chris Ballinger, and Calen morelli just to name a few. What is the key to creating magic?

It's different for everyone. There's no secret formula. First and foremost, you should have a strong foundation in magic and just be a creative person.

Study the classic books and get an understanding of different techniques and methods. The trickiest part of inventing an effect is coming up with the effect in the first place. Once you have the idea of what you want the audience to see then the process of getting the method together follows. I attended an excellent lecture on effect creation which suggested making notes and lists whenever an idea comes to mind, share the ideas with trusted collegues and get feedback, create a prototype of the effect and try it on friends who know enough about magic to give you honest feedback, refine and then repeat the process until you have a workable product.

There are two different approaches to creating a new magic effect: derivative and non-derivative. Do not confuse "Creativity" with "Originality."
The first is most common and comes from learning about effects and methods already in existence. Then you modify one in some way -- even just new patter. The second comes from seeing an object or setting and asking, "What can I do with this?" You create something from "whole cloth." There is a special thrill from both types of creativity that cannot be taken away when you later discover it is not original. Originality really only matters if you are trying to sell the effect. Niote that I refer to magic "effects." There is little to be gained in creating a "trick."

Keep a note book. Start writing down ideas. Sometimes I'll be reading a magic book and misread something that suggests an effect that's different from the one I'm reading. I've also gotten ideas from various kinds of imagery. Attend lectures and listen to the thinking that goes into the lecture's material. Put time aside to create.

In order to create effective magic, whether it's original or derivative, you need to be fairly well versed. That's not to say you need to know lots of tricks (though I reckon it helps), but you need to have a certain mastery of psychology and perception. It helps to understand things like geometry and optics. The more you know about as much as possible, the better off you'll be.
Then, it's just a matter of finding your way of thinking about things and starting to experiment until you've got what you want. Personally, I usually think of an effect and then try to figure out how to do it, though there are times when I come up with a method and wrap an effect around it. It all varies. For me, really, creativity isn't some mystical thing. It's just the emergent property of a mind that's always thinking and playing around with new ideas. But please, for the love of god and all that is holy, don't just limit yourself to magic books. Think about EVERYTHING. Your magic will end up being better for it, as you're able to tie your magic into something else.

I suggest just keep your mind open when looking at different objects and ask yourself what could be interesting if preformed with it. If it's something you'd like to see, then start working on ways to accomplish it. Basically start with a problem & try to find ways to "fix" it. Think outside the box with everyday items. With technology these days, there are all sorts of ways to do things.

Thank you Robert, I just love, "But please, for the love of god and all that is holy, don't just limit yourself to magic books. Think about EVERYTHING". I have really thought about it like that but you're right.

What if you are about to create some new magic trick but are not a professional? How you would you go about marketing or selling this? Some people are just inventors. I guess find a magician you trust and see if a deal can be made?
