Any one know the name of the effect where you show a long thin coiled wire and when it is rotated
it appears to get hot. Then rotate it again and back to normal. Anyone know the name of this effect and if it is still available?

It is Red Hot Wire by LUBOR FIEDLER and no longer made. Though they can be found second hand.
You can search the Café for posts about it. here is a pic: http://www.martinsmagic.com/full/__4007.htm |

Where are the times
That's at least 30 to 40 years old. I wouldn't be surprised if one of these days a young "creative" magician "invents" it..... |

This was sold in the U.S. back in the 1970's, Supreme Magic offered it in England, then as happens in the magic world, it was copied here in America. That wire was shorter and thinner. I seen it at the local magic shop and was not impressed. Actually, as soon as I see the shop order do it, I knew what was happening. Cute idea, but no more then that, in my opinion.

Back in the 1980's, some performers were doing this effect with one ring of the Linking Rings!

I have one I bought from Lubor at a convention many years ago and the proper handling really does make the effect. As Waterloophai mentioned, the move should be invisible to the spectator. It was held in a curved position in one hand only which made it look even more like a coil from a toaster or space heater. It would gradually change color with no visible motion. Then you show BOTH sides red hot. At that point I move it towards the spectator's hand and they never fail to yank their hand away quick. There's no doubt it's a fooler it scares people. The only weakness is that it's not examinable. Other than that it's a perfect illusion when it's done right. One of Lubor's best I think.
