I have Run Dino Run. (Similar to Run Rabbit Run). I also have Potty time by Tommy James. Both of the effects end with the disappearing object ending up on your back. I want to use both effects in my show, but having one reappear in a different manner. What would you suggest?

Come up with a third effect with similar ending. First two times the vanished item is on your back. This sets a pattern. Third time, it ends up on a volunteer's back.

How about--before the show begins--giving Dad the extra rabbit to put in his pocket so that after the rabbit disappears, it magically appears in Dad's pocket. Or use Mom's handbag.
I used to do Slydini's Paper Balls Over the Head with a small silk hanky and sometimes a parent would catch the silk and put it in his pocket. When the silk vanished, it magically reappeared there. ----- Sonny

I have Run Rabbit Run and Potty Time. At the moment I first use Run Rabbit. Behind my table out of sight, on the floor and face down is the Rabbit. On the back of it are glued several M***ets. There are also some on the bottom of my shoe. At some point during the show, I casually show the soles of my shoes by sitting on a chair or the stage. Shortly after, I perform Run Rabbit but before I do, I walk on Rabbit so he is on board so to speak. When the time comes for him to reappear, I make a bit of an act by looking all around and on the floor, as you do. Then I 'tread on him'
I show that he is ok and uninjured by popping him back in his house (I have another M****et at the back this move) and letting him runabout again. Then I can do Potty time. I also use M***ets for this now instead of the supplied you know what. |

I use First4magnets ( other good suppliers are available....) who are here in the UK. The ones I use are the Adhesive 25 x 10 x 1.5mm thick N42 Neodymium Magnet - 1.7kg Pull. I always glue them into their positions despite the adhesive backs.

I have done coins like that before for close up. I never thought about doing it for something parlor sized. You thought of a great idea. Especially with a small animal like a guinea pig. You are sitting on a gold mine.

Do you wanna know why magicians make things reappear on their backs?
BECAUSE THEY ARE UNCREATIVE, UNORIGINAL DOOFUSES WHO CAN'T THINK OF WHAT TO DO ON THEIR OWN! I am sorry to be so blunt, but it's true. For cryin' out loud, think of something NEW! In that regard, I am glad to see you asking this question, Mike. Okay, let me give you an example: I do "Pizza Oven Surprise" (the Smoky Mountain version). I start by displaying a pizza menu, and I talk about Luigi who runs the place. I read the menu and have some jokes along the way. I order the "2 for 1 pizza special" because Luigi says it's the best thing on the menu (do you see where this is going, uncreative, unoriginal doofus magician?). As soon as I get off the phone, there is a knock at the door (knock knock knock) and guess who's standing there" "LUIGI!" they yell. "NO!" I reply "That's ridiculous! Luigi was just on the phone. It's Luigi's pizza delivery` boy!" Of course, since I ordered the 2 for 1 deal, it's delivered in a box that apparently holds 2 pizza. Pay attention, uncreative, unoriginal doofus magician. There is now a reason for everything that is happening, including the goofy looking pizza box. Anyway, I go through a routine that has a few additional twists over what the other uncreative, unoriginal doofus magician does. But let's get to Mike's question: How do I make the pizza reappear? Remember the menu? After I ordered the pizza, I placed the menu onto a simple see-through stand on my table. After the pizza vanishes, I return to my original conversation with Luigi (uncreative, unoriginal doofus magician, notice how this completes the circle of magic, which NEVER had anything to do with my back). "I wish you could see this (I am now looking at the back of the menu as it sets on it's stand, as if I am seeing something)! Remember when Luigi said the best thing on the menu was the small pizza pie? Apparently, it's the best thing BEHIND the menu, too!" With that statement, I quickly pick up the menu, to show the pizza now sitting on the skeletal stand that was holding the menu. I pick up the pizza with the other hand. I am standing in a great applause cue posture, with the menu in one raised hand and the pizza in the other. I am facing the audience rather than facing away from them, which is far better theatrically, and the audience is surprised since the pizza reappeared in an impossible location, the menu being a simple two-sided laminated menu of the type you would really see in a restaurant (in fact, I use a real menu. At the start of the routine, I purposely display BOTH sides of the menu several times as I am reading it). I suppose I should apologize for my condescending tone in this post, but I really hate seeing every magician perform every trick the same doggone way that every OTHER magician performs it. (Inside I am laughing a little, because I just KNOW that there are some reading this saying "Starr doesn't know how to do that trick .... it's supposed to reappear on his back!") |

I love creating for my self and others.
It is indeed good to give and receive. Suggestions: In a future routine it appears out of a scarf production.(no birds) later in your show it appears out of a small square/circle ..... crystal casket ......

He said that whenever he purchased a trick, he always got two copies. He threw the instructions/suggested patter away, took one of the tricks and worked with it until he had literally taken it to pieces. Always asking, "Can I make this bigger? Smaller? Something else? What other effects can I achieve using the method? What other methods can I use to create the same effect? etc." Only when he and his team had (in his words) completely destroyed the first trick would he then start using the 2nd copy of the trick to create an original routine/effect. The easy way is just to do what everyone else is doing and what everyone else has always done. The other way - the way Paul Daniels, Copperfield etc. take - involves time, effort, energy, uncertainty, stepping into the "unknown" & actually thinking about what we're doing and why we're doing it. But it is a far, far better way of doing things. Like you, I think it's great that Dynamike asked the question. The fact that (as of typing this message) the topic has been viewed 327 times but only has 14 replies says more about the lack of creativity of many entertainers than any words can. Just my thoughts. Mike P.S. Dynamike, thanks for the welcome.

We (and I include myself in this) really need to tear ourselves away from the "traditional" if we want to set ourselves apart from the rest of the pack. Even if we are using "traditional" props, we should add our own twists, turns, and surprises. |

I would disagree with Starrpower in the sense that the reason an object appearing on the magician's back might be in part due to uncreative magicians, but I think the reason it continues to occur in tricks and routines created for kid shows is because it always gets a HUGE reaction from kids. I fully believe in being creative and original, but not at the expense of replacing a HUGE reaction with a possible lesser reaction. (Not saying that that's what your routine is doing, Starrpower, by the way)
I consider "On Your Back" an incredibly useful technique, and rather than abandon it completely for the sake of originality, I'd use my creativity to come up with ways to use it in my show that don't involve the usual Chico the Chimp, Pizza Oven, Potty Time, etc. For example, in your miser's dream routine, have a kid toss an invisible coin to the bucket but no sound is heard. You turn around looking for the coin, and the kids find it stuck to your back. Guaranteed HUGE reaction ... you know it will work because it's been proven time and time again. Or (original to the normal routining for the Mis-Made Flags) toss the red, white, and blue silks in the bag, but you pull out a silk with only red and white stripes - no blue section. Where did the blue go? There it is, hanging on your back. HUGE reaction ... guaranteed! In one of my YouTube videos, I mention Fig Newtons - repeatedly finding an object throughout the show, which ends up tying all the random tricks together, making the show feel complete and cohesive. "On Your Back" can be incorporated to the same effect. Consistently find items on your back throughout the show ... doing so can tie all your random routines together with that consistent running gag. So to disagree with Starrpower, finding objects on your back can be a very useful tool. To agree with Starrpower, be original and creative, and use the tool as a tool. Don't just use it with the tricks you buy with that tool already built into the routine. The fact that it is a tool allows you the freedom to use it any time you want in your show to get a HUGE reaction ... guaranteed. Christopher |

Christopher, you disagree with me?! That's pretty bold!
Seriously, I think you missed my point. I never said NOT to do that particular thing (reappear on back). What I did was examine WHY magicians do it ... and I concluded that most do it because they don't have an original bone in their bodies. If you find that you are removing tricks from your show because they are too identical, particularly in a reveal, well ... maybe it's time to put on the ol' creative hat and change the routine (which, btw, is exactly what Mike is looking to do, it seems). I do plenty of "standard" things, but I know WHY I am doing them ... and it's rarely because "its the way it's supposed to be done". One more thing - a HUGE reaction is not always good. I have seen magicians get "huge" reactions that are not good at all; it's just losing control over their audience. |

I agree with everything you post ever, Starrpower Actually, that's true. You and I have very similar backgrounds if I am remembering correctly - a lot of theatre in our past & current lives outside of magic. I think I remember that about you?
And I did get your point. I shouldn't have phrased it as disagreeing really ... I really just wanted to go further with it and make it clear that the technique isn't bad. It's just that it's generally ONLY used with the store-bought effect like you said. The technique, when extracted from all those store-bought routines can be used effectively with almost any trick performed in our shows. And yes I even agree that many (maybe most?) magicians out there are "uncreative, unoriginal doofuses" who just do what they're told. BUT to a certain degree, I think that's like calling Academy Award winning Actors doofuses for not writing their own scripts. If they did, the outcome might just be dreadful (some have and were). The point being, if a person loves performing magic for kids and doesn't have the creative bone like you and me (more than a bone ... a need & desire to be original), then I fully support them using whatever off-the-shelf routines at their disposal if it gives them the opportunity to perform, do what they love, connect with the audience, and make kids have a good time. BUT maybe you and I are both wrong. They're not "uncreative, original doofuses." Instead, they're just lazy. In that case, screw em! I'd actually love to see your show, Starrpower. I don't do a single thing that was "off-the-shelf," so to speak. Same as you, I use standard ideas ... but I've extracted them out of the routines they're commonly known for and used them for my own needs. I imagine your show would be full of surprises for me and other magicians. And Huge reactions vs Huge/Out-of-control reactions is a whole different topic. Speaking of topics, Mike, for your original post... One easy idea ... when the Dino disappears, don't immediately make him reappear. Tell the kids to watch out for him during the show. Then later in the show, find a way to work him into a trick. For example, place a silk in a change bag to make it disappear. Child waves a wand then reaches inside and finds the dino. Christopher |
