Anybody have any experience with a Tannens/tony Spina appearing cane? It's a great prop and I just started using it and it opens like a dream without a silk...I just added an 18in silk to it and even when I twirl the silk like a rope the cane only opens half way and the corner sticks out the top... I've tried cutting the silk down and even cutting it diamond style - which I hates trying because I don't want to compromise the silk when I shouldn't have to - but now even with the modifications to the silk it still opens way too slow -- this I really frustrating
Can anybody help or offer some advice if you've worked with these canes before and maybe even had similar issue? Thank you!!!

Not sure if this would work in your case, but there was another means to handle the transformation that others have used successfully...
Begin twirling the silk, windmill-style, and at some point release the cane, but continue to hold it by the ferrule (small end of the cane). The centrifugal force allows the cane to extend to the fullest length. Gradual slowing of the twirling creates the illusion of the silk going stiff and the transformation is realized. Only one hand is involved throughout the process, except maybe at the very beginning and the very end. This was often done with a cane silk (black with white tip), but can certainly work with a colored silk, too.

Yep the canes are oiled and brand new -- a friend if mine got back to me and said he had to use a diamond cut silk for his which I'm hoping I won't have to do...from stage diamond cut silks just don't have the same appearance in my opinion they look like an old wet paper towel

I just will throw out some causes and things you can try.
Mine takes an 18" silk with no problem, but it one of originals that were made in the late 1980's I believe. To much oil can make the cane stick as well. Try fresh oil and wipe with a cloth and wipe all of it off. It only needs a very light coat while working. If you want you can try the technique of putting a clear fishing line loop on the release. Then use a 24" silk and draw a corner up through the loop to the middle of the silk, then release. See it that method is any better. Does it extend fully without the silk attached? Is the silver cap smooth material? If this is rough, it will prevent the cane from opening fully. If it is the silver metal cap, is it bent in to tight causing it to dig into the metal? This may slow down the cane as well. I noticed that Tannen's do not sell this Tony Spina Deluxe model any longer. |

Right Michael~ Neil Foster, as far as I know, "started" the twirling silk to cane about 30 years ago. I'm fairly sure that he also "started" using the black silk with the white corner. It IS, IMHO, tbe prettiest presentation of the silk to cane.
Not too many know that Neil didn't use a VANISHING CANE. (He vanished the APPEARING CANE.)

There can be couple of things going on. I assume the cane is in good shape and works well. Having said that, you can go to a thinner silk. You can take a 5 momme silk and try it. That should help as that is primarily what I supply when guys need silks for appearing cane. If that does not work, you will have to go to a diagonal or diamond silk.

I have the same problem, that the cane (Fantasio, brand new) does not suck the silk in completely! Help!

Hot water to reset and tighten your cane per Fantasio's instructions. I tried it and it works. Also, Fantasio Canes can only use a 12" silk regular or diamond shape. |

Are you using a pocket square or a real silk?
Is it possible that the knot you tie is too big? Joey D |
