Now that we've successfully derailed the Uruguayan pot thread with Lee Marvin memories, I thought that his greatest role, for which he won the Oscar for Best Actor, deserved a thread of its own.
In this short clip from Cat Ballou, Marvin exemplified the old saying "We never knew he drank until we saw him sober." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg2Z3yOReR0 If you've never seen this classic, it's available on DVD. (I think the whole thing is on YouTube as well.) It's one of my all time favorite comedies. This is also the scene that reminds me of the quick-draw artist I once spent too much time with in Deadwood. |

Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye! Great movie!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

In his Oscar acceptance speech, Lee Marvin opened by saying, "I think I should be sharing this award with a horse somewhere out there in the San Fernando Valley," a reference to the horse Kid Shelleen rode, which appeared to be as drunk as Shelleen was.

I love that movie!
But I still don't forgive Jane Fonda. Remember his TV series, M-Squad? Here's another gem of his that I can find anywhere. Sometime around 1964-1966 or so, Lee Marvin starred in a TV mini series called Sergeant Ryker, playing the titled soldier as a Sergeant on trial for something during the Korean War. He played a prisoner being courtmartialed, I believe. It was a great series as I recall, but I can't fine any evidence of that movie/mini series ever having been made. I'd really like to see it again, so if anyone here has any ideas, I'm all eyes and ears. Netflix has nothing on it.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

My sides ache when I watch him sing Happy Birthday to Frankie Ballou. Such a different role for him. He deserved the Oscar!

It helps when they break out of their "expected" style of role.
Look at John Wayne for "True Grit" and Humphrey Bogart for "The African Queen." "Sergeant Ryker" was 1968. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063584/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_21 Apparently in 1963, it was a two-part episode of Kraft Suspense Theater; "The Case Against Paul Ryker" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056768/

I found the 1968 link myself and that can't be the one I was thinking of because I was in the military then and couldn't have seen it. It had to be the Kraft Suspense Theater that I remember because I do remember it being a two part series. I'd sure like to find a copy of that somewhere.
Thanks Ed.

A very enjoyable movie and one I own.
I read some where that KirK Douglas was first offed the role. Hard now to imagine anyone else but Marvin playing the role.

First choice for the title role was Ann-Margret, but she didn't want to do it. Rumor has it that Jane Fonda didn't understand the script, but due to contractual obligations, she had no choice but to take the role of Cat Balou. |
