My preferred perfomance modality is wordlessness: I might make noises (like old-style Mr. Bean) but do not use words per se. This has always frustrated attempts at magic effects: either so much of the misdirection relies on patter or the logic of the trick is explained through patter.
After a long hiatus from performing, I am returning. I have an old list of skills I had hoped to integrate into performance, which includes magic. So what advice do you have for creating wordless routines? I'm not looking for patterless routines for specific tricks but rather how to present a trick to an audience without speech. |

Have you thought about the importance of music in a silent act?

I have used music at times. Since a large portion of my previous performing was in Ran Faires, recorded music has not been an option. At this point, I think music would be the final thing to add rather than the starting place.

I like to get inanimate objects and use them as fellow clown- changing status' but, usually it being the higher of the two. I find the best routines come from getting up on your feet and experimenting ideas with no goal but to have fun. If you can get a couple like minded clowns together magic can happen..
Good luck and let us know what you come up with

I try to stick with things folks can relate to....
Some old examples include. Blowing up a balloon(with or without an actual balloon Trying to open something(again with or without that something I like the comment about status. That is great friction/conflict between 1 , 2 or 3 clowns. The one between yourself can be tough. Sort of the old good guy/gal on your shoulder versus the bad guy/gal on your other shoulder. Making a choice. ...like finding money on the ground...Keep it...turn it in.... resolution could be....______________ you can take it from here... Another possibility is the other clown..is a puppet. Did you end up finding material on isolating objects eg heavy balloon mid air push?

I have both studied and taught mime - enough to know I am not a skilled mime! I do well with wordless characters, but never had the physical precision for good mime. I can sloppily do a heavy balloon - it gets the idea across, but won't win awards!
What I was hoping for were ways to explore wordlessness as part of routining with magic. I can do it with juggling, some slapstick, and even to give directions. I'm looking for how to think about magic wordlessly. So thanks for the ideas, and I continue to explore! |

Peter,
Yes. Can't remember where I found it... or where it is now. Went on to other projects. I have seen many people do it. In fact back in the "day", I did it as part of Mime over Matter..(over 25 years ago...and a much different body, mind set and character portrayed on stage) Be safe, well and creative. Harris
