How many effects should you have in your show that requires volunteers on stage to help?
I am working out a new show and it seems that every effect needs a volunteer or two. Is that too much?

Audience INVOLVEMENT & INTERACTION IS IMPORTANT! However, I 'side' with Michael.
Suggest you read FITZKEE, NELMS, and KENNETH WEBER'S recent book: "MAXIMUM ENTERTAINMENT".

I tend to alternate a trick or two without and then one with volunteers. Seems to break up the " I need another volunteer getting process"

If every single effect requires a volunteer to come up from the audience and on stage it runs the risk of really slowing the show down and becoming a bit monotonous, especially if the crowd is a little shy. I find it helps if you don't call on a volunteer until your third effect in and then after that maybe every other effect. This way you have time to establish you credentials and build a repoir with your audience, because at the start of the show you don't already want to slow it down, and it gives the audience time to warm up to you so they'll be more willing. You can also break the monotony of having people come out of their chairs by having routines where they can participate from their seats (tossed out deck, various mentalism effects, etc) That way you're coming into the audience and bringing the show closer to them. Another aspect is hills and valleys to give the audience time to relax and just watch you rather.
Bottom line it's possible but in my personal opinion I wouldn't have every piece require a volunteer, sometimes they just want to sit and relax and they need a reason to want to come out of their seats. |

Try finding some "real" magic tricks you may like to perform. Six Card or Bill Repeat, Vanishing candle, Chinese Sticks, 20th Century Silks, Comedy Color Changing Silk, Comedy Silk To Egg, Mikame Acrobatic / Dancing Golf Club, Egg Bag without the use of an assistant, Comedy Vanishing Silk To Pocket with Lemon ending, etc.
