I enjoy and use several illusions/puzzles. I use a similar one, but I like the one in the video with the chocolate squares, particularly when the single piece is placed in the center and you see it is not aligned with the other pieces.
Unfortunately, not all spectators share my interest in such effects. Possibly it's my routine, but I think this type of effect only appeals to certain individuals, as does a math trick.

This one completely baffles me. I recreated the puzzle with a piece of paper.
All 4 pieces fit together, and can be measured as 4 units of chocolate by 4 units. That's 16 units squared. That is the surface area of the pieces summed together. Yet, when repositioned, the assembled square is still 4x4 units, but minus a squared unit from the middle, making it now only 15 units squared. What puzzles me is how can the measured surface area change just by repositioning the pieces? I think this one is a cool one to show math students and teachers. Especially when focusing on how the measured surface area changes. |

Yet, when repositioned, the assembled square is still 4x4 units, Ummm...no. Some nice explorations of this principle by Paul Curry and Winston Freer. Worth YouTubing (if that's now a verb!)

The good thing is that it only requires 4+1 pieces.
