So I was looking to get into card tricks since they seem to be really easy tricks to whip out on the fly.
I was looking into sites like ellusionist and theory11 for tutorials. I also saw that you can buy special decks made for card tricks. Since I can't buy stuff online( even if I could I probably wouldn't since I don't know yet if I'll get into it) I wondered if any deck would do. And when I do get to like this what sort of decks should I look out for? Thanks in advance =D |

The standard is usually Bicycle Playing Cards, which you can find at CVS or Walgreens, Walmart, Target, etc. You get the idea. Those'll be perfect for any sort of card tricks you want to do. They're affordable, recognizable, and easy to find, and they're great quality cards. Once you start learning more and becoming a more advanced card magician, it's really up to you what to do. A lot of people like to try out lots of different decks, and some people just stay with the same deck forever. Up to you! Enjoy learning

Thanks and even though I have none of the mentioned stores where I live I will go to the local store tomorrow to see. I'm quite sure though that bicycle is an American brand and we don't have that.
Thanks anyway though! |

Not sure where you're from but the main thing is to stay away from those cheap tourist/souvenir decks. They don't have any finish on them. Also stay away from plastic cards, they're not smooth enough to do most sleights.

My person position is that we never want to get into cards or coins that don't seem "normal" access to our audience. Therefore, I use mostly Bikes unless I use my sponsors' advertising cards, and give the decks away.

I've been in magic for the past 20 years and when I first started I used to get people asking all the time to see the cards and ask me if that's a trick deck. I don't notice that tendency anymore. My viewpoint is that we're professionals in what we do and in turn we use the best props available to us. If that means using a deck that has a better stock and overall finish with a design that they're not familiar with then so be it. I feel it sets us apart from just the casual guy doing card tricks. |

You can always buy bicycle cards on ebay (that's what I do), at very reasonable prices.

If Bicycles aren't the standard where you live, then you're definitely going to have to resort to buying cards online. I personally don't prefer Bicycles, despite what people say, I think they are poor quality cards.. But the price can make up for it. If I need tons of duplicates and I'm doing a lot of street magic, I will go buy a Brick (12) of Bicycle Decks and use those.. But if I can afford it, I will use Bee's or Tally-Ho depending on what sort of tricks I'm doing. A lot of reversed card effects aren't recommended to do with Bee's as they have no border. If I were you, I'd try to save some money for ebay or something and buy 2 Bicycle, 2 Tally-Ho, and 2 Bee's and just see which you like the most. Those the 3 most common brands of cards. Plus.. no matter what you do, spectators KNOW that you're doing something to make that effect happen. A trick deck or not, they know that you're trying to fool them and that you aren't being completely honest. The only decks that I have ever used in which arise suspicion of "Trickery" are Bridge sized cards similar to ones that come in a magic kit from the toy store. Stick to real brands of cards and you'll be fine. Good luck!

I have found that using a regular deck has been better for me. I started with some self working tricks and have moved onto some easy slights. With a trick deck you can perform the trick easily but you are left with a deck you can't show. I don't have the skills to ditch it yet nor do I feel confident enough to act my way out.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone I'll look into buying them from e-bay.
Oh and I live in Estonia. |

Since you live in Estonia, stay away from bikes, European cards are of a much higher quality then American playing cards. You shouldn't have any trouble finding a quality deck at the local market.

Where are you sir/madam?
Any decent cards will do, personally I like Phoenix (from Germany). Depending on the tricks you want to learn, any cards irrespective of quality will do. Buy a book of tricks (The Magic Book by Harry Lorayne, Mark Wilson's Complete Magic Course) and don't worry too much about the cards. |
