I promise I tried to search first.
So in my reading here the name Cellini pops up so I start digging more, find out he's a well respected and accomplished street performer. I'm interested, so I keep reading, whammo! he's got a "how to" DVD set, Great! Come to find out they're running $65 a pop? What the what? Having been a consumer for a while now, most instructional dvd's run in the $20-$35 range or so individually, $65 is clearly out of the norm. My question is what, in your opinion justifies the price tag? I am certainly interested in the set but that price tag is a bit of a speed bump. I admit, I'm complaining a bit but what I want to know is, in your opinion, what sets them apart? In your opinion is the price tag justified? Worth the investment? Why are they deliberately ahead of the average price point? To set them apart? Limit the appeal? |

Consider it the price of learnng from one of the masters of your trade. You're paying for a lifetime of experience. It's hard to put a price point on that. Only you can decide what it is worth to you.
Is it worth it? I have everything Cellini filmed or printed. I never regretted what I had to spend on any of it. |

I liked them. But I do think they are over priced.

The DVD's are good, but as usual, a better return on your money is to get the book.

Cellini is another kind of performer. I have most of his releases. It is always difficult to tell someone else if they think something is worth the money.
When I started out, the first DVD in his Street series helped me more then I understood at the time. Cellini had a way that is not taught these days. His calm appearance, his way of life. If you want to know how to build an act, make money and have a lot of fun. Perhaps Kozmos DVD:s are better suited. Cellinis style is more old school and in many ways fundamental for the street magician. If I was to tell you what to buy,DVD-wise, I would say the first one. It is worth the money. If you're after tricks look elsewhere. Best, Ark

Nah, I have more material/tricks that I know what to do with anymore. I'm more interested in building skill foundations and understanding the how's and why's of performance, psychology if you will than actual tricks.
With regards to the Cellini set mostly I was just wondering why it was priced higher than the average dvd. |

To keep it in the hands of those who really want it and not in the hands of those who are just adding another dvd to their bookshelf. If the TT cost $65 every 7 year old wouldn't blurt out "I know how that's done!" when they see you disappear a silk.

I have the DVD's and his book. The DVDs were purchased first. The book is hard to find. It is not cheap either. I am glad to have both.

Greetings and Salutations,
I think we need to put this into perspective. Cellini's books and videos are not expensive, they're investments. If you put in the time reading, watching, studying, reviewing, and assessing and reassessing your performance vis a vis Cellini's advice, you will discover that his material is actually quite cost-effective, if not down-right cheap for what you're getting. Cellini learned from Slydini, a master, and Cellini is himself a master. He is, unfortunately, no longer with us, but his wisdom, knowledge, and experience have been captured for history. What is the knowledge, experience, and wisdom of a master worth to you? Only you can determine the price you're willing to pay. If all you're interested in is dabbling in street performing, there are several cheap resources, but remember, you get what you pay for. I have discovered that any time well-spent on the street pays huge dividends in other arenas. My beautiful, talented, lovely, and significantly better half knows where my copy of Cellini's Royal Touch is on the book shelf, and she knows to grab it if nothing else in case of a fire. I am convinced that the magic and advice in this book alone could take me around the world and back again with nothing more than a few magic props, a decent costume, and some pluck. I have read the book several times, and if I could only own one book, this would be the one. However, that is just my $.02 (USD) worth. YMMV. With the exception of the London Lecture from International Magic, I own everything Cellini, and I have benefited from it greatly. Joe Zeman aka The Mage Ulysses |

I agree with every word MagicUlysses said, with one caveat. I recently discovered (after years of self deluding DVD buying) that I really only learn from books... as a result I'm in the process of selling almost all my DVDs. Try and understand how you learn and then buy the materials appropriate for that learning style. Cellini's books are incredible but, and I'm sticking my neck out here, I believe that his DVDs (with the exception of the International Magic London Lecture) were filmed past Cellini's prime... they're good, but the London Lecture and the books are better.

I agree with you Tom, you have to find learning material geared towards your learning style. It only took me 37 years to figure out, I have a really hard time learning from books. The book Devious posted seems to be more theory, and such, I can read that all day long and learn fine but when it comes to the routining or step by step instructions for how to do an effect it's like mud to me, I can do it but it's really difficult. I am very much a visual learner.

Chris.Z, that kind of leads to coping someone else, more then learning and applying your own personality and mannerisms to your performance.
There is a set of DVD on performing, but as it is by a person who actually consults people on their performances, it would not show how you should perform a trick. Joanie Spina consults but you have to have your magic acts down. She will not tell you want magic to perform. She created a set of DVDs for the serious minded called "Get your Act Together". http://joaniespina.com/products/dvds Tony Clark also consults magicians. -------------------------------------------- About your above comment: It is difficult for everyone, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Those that put in the hard thought and work, are the ones in Vegas, Atlantic City, and performing professionally. |

Wow Bill, it's a good thing you're here to tell me what to do. I'm sorry I had my own opinion, I didn't mean to. Do you know me? You ever looked me in the eye and shook my hand?
Did you seriously just discount DVD's because you think it will lead to "coping" someone elses performances and then reccomend a dvd set to me? It's incredibly asanine and arrogant of you to completely ignore my previous post where I said "I know what works for me", and then to imply that those of us who are visual learners, and play to their strengths will never make it in the big leagues. In the future, you just let me worry about me ok? You owe me an apology |

Chris.Z if you've never busked and want to try it, Kozmo's dvds "Tales From The Street" is a very valuable resource as it will shave years off the learning curve ( if you're going to go out, you might as well increase your chances of success and make some money ).
Here's a clip of Kozmo describing what the dvds are about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmk5zI4Dsw0 |
