I do it to share my joy with my audience. Sharing my joy is one of the biggist things can you do to another person.

I do it because it is fun for both my audience and myself.

I've made great strides with my mentalism in the past year or so. I remember, in the beginning, getting angry sometimes when the spec would start right off the bat being super skeptical, you know those random jerk spectators who immediately make it into a you vs me thing... I leaned quite simply to focus on specs who WANT to enjoy themselves. I focused on being likeable, simple, calm, and sharing joy as mentioned previously. REALLY made all the difference in the world. |

Bob, gotta ask: Do you mean just "convey the impression" you like the people you are performing for, or conveying that you actually like them? If the latter, what do you do if you don't like your audience?
Either way, I think this is a very valuable tip and deserves emphasis, particularly in this kind of conversation. I have heard it said before, but obviously we can all benefit from the reminder. |

It's just like they say about sincerity- once you can fake it you've got it made.
But, seriously, it helps if you really do like them. Sometimes it can be rough, but I just pretend that my best friends are in the audience. |

We need to be authentic also in our authenticity If our performance is perceived as aimed to "fool" the audience and present just a clever puzzle, is very difficult to be liked as performer. Is a personal task to search and find a personal approach to be likeable on stage. A recommended read is "How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie" That book can help to find a motivation about "read minds" with a little bit of thought and time. Best

It's just line dating I think - no one wants to be around a kiss azz either. My background d us in sales as some of you know. The #1 mistake most sales people make is talking about themselves or the product first. Regardless of the product, the product is completely irrelevant unless the salesperson (performer) understands his audience first- their needs, their desires- their names- their location - their company- their venue. Ken Weber goes into much of this in his superb book Maximum Entertainment.

This past summer, I saw another mentalist performing. I was pretty excited about it. Excitement slowly slid downward to boredom and finally to "come on already." The guy droned on and on -- and each effect he performed was an attempt to showcase himself. He was going for "mysterious" but wound up coming off like a boor...the exact kind of guy you hope you WON'T see when you go to a mentalism show.
Why? He wasn't there to share anything...he wasn't taking his audience on a journey. He was there for himself. It was tiresome and just a little embarrassing. Mentalism effects are inherently shocking to an audience. Think about it: you've gone into their minds and told them what they are thinking. Set aside the mechanics involved in getting there for just a second. See it from the audience perspective: this is amazing stuff, doubly so because it's just possible what you're doing is real. Most mentalism effects, even competently performed, have the potential to wow an audience. This guy was competent...but he wasn't there for the audience. He was there for himself. If your motivation in performing mentalism is to suck up as much affirmation as possible...you're wasting a valuable opportunity to SHARE the experience with your audience...to make each show an adventure. Seriously. A well presented mentalism performance has the potential to blend the powerful effects, surprises and (of course) the personality of the performer to create life-long memories. Any windbag who sets that aside to get his ego stroked is really missing a wonderful experience. David
