The bottom line is that there are those who take the scientific consensus seriously and those who don't want to give it any credence at all. One thing is certain though, reality remains unaffected by personal opinions and political agendas. Sticking one's head in the sand doesn't change anything.

A guy aged 50 walks into a medical facility.
The M.D. is only concerned with what has happened to the patient in the last 30 seconds health wise. This is how I see the science of climate change or whatever the chosen name of the week is. Ya'll have fun. |

Bob belief does nothing. Actions are meaningful. So asking what actions are proposed and what the cost benefit analysis is seems prudent.
But nobody wants to do that. You just want a blank check and don't want anyone to question motives of anyone except the Koch brothers. Don't examine the results from the past just the intentions of the future. People are finally tired of it I hope.

Ask NASA- you know, the guys whose science took us to the moon? They seem to know what they're doing and what they're talking about.

NASA Global Warming Stance Blasted By 49 Astronauts, Scientists Who Once Worked At Agency

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

It's got to be better than doing nothing! |

You're assuming, Rockwall, that the cost of doing something is higher than the cost of doing nothing. Which means you really don't believe in AGW. If you did, it follows that the cost of doing nothing is catastrophic, albeit not in our lifetimes. But it's clear that you - and several others here - don't believe in the underlying problem. When insisting on a resolution of the question of costs (or in Jonathan's case, assuagement of post-colonial guilt), don't forget to factor in the cost of leaving the planet essentially uninhabitable by humans over the next few hundred years. Which of course would decimate the S&P and Dow equally with the economies and population of the developing nations. That's not part of your calculus, because you don't believe in the problem. But suppose for a moment that the majority of climate scientists are right (and no, astronauts are not climate scientists - they are pilots). Would that affect your cost/benefit analysis, at least a little?

But you'd have to be a conspiracy theorist of the highest order to believe that the scientists of the WORLD devised AGW as a secret plot to get rich. But, believe what you like. |

All you talk about is the cost of doing nothing, implying that the cost of doing 'something' will always be better. I'll make a simple illustration of the problem with your logic. Let's say that the 'something' that someone proposes is to have a 50% flat tax placed everyone to help fight AGW. Let's say we do that. Then let's say that 50% is spent on something that in the end had no real effect on AGW. Maybe it lowered the rise in temperature over 100 years by 1 100th of a degree. Now, obviously, you felt great that we were doing 'something' and so your conscious was assuaged, but was the misery that the 50% tax created worth it? Spending Billions in dollars to fight global warming to save millions in damage caused by it doesn't make sense. Tell you what, find me a scientifically proposed solution that claims it will actually stop AGW and then we can talk. |

Show me the proof that doing nothing is catastrophic. It is all models with shaky methodology.
Also you act as if the EPA and democrats are not busy legislating companies out of business. You want to do even MORE. So the choice isn't doing nothing but nice straw man.

One other question MaxfieldsMagic.
If the ONLY solution that significantly stops or halts AGW is the reduction of the earths population by 75%, would you support that solution? (Since not doing so would be catastrophic?) And before you claim that is an outrageous question I'll point out that there are many who believe that that IS the only solution. |

It's burning the straw man (wicker man?) that's supposed to be making things worse.
How you live your life is your opinion on the matter. Is hot air and outgassing believed to be a threat to humanity's future? proselytize for the prophet in the lab coat predicting doom by hot air. Yes, sad. Not surprising but sad. Specious: It's gotta be true cause scientists say so. you gotta listen cause its about the end of the world. you have to believe this picture. this large pile of numbers make it the truth That sales pitch stopped working when Pascal tried to wager against Popper and found nothing to falsify.

Some like to the feeling of acting as agent.
Some learned about the notion of agency. Do you fear the Millgram labcoat?
